Bill Brandt

Bill Brandt, the greatest of British photographers, who visually defined the English identity in the mid-twentieth century, was an enigma. Indeed, despite his assertions to the contrary, he was not in fact English at all. His life, like much of his work, was an elaborate construction. England was his adopted homeland and the English were his chosen subject. The England in which Brandt arrived in the Thirties was deeply polarized. He photographed both upstairs and downstairs, and recorded the industrial north as well as the society rounds of the affluent south. Although much of his work was for the new illustrated magazines, it was frequently influenced by surrealism and an eye for the slight...

Origin and Evolution of the Gastropod Family Pomatiopsidae, with Emphasis on the Mekong River Triculinae

Describes an extraordinary endemic radiation of hydrobioid snails in the Mekong River (MR). The monophyletic radiation involving the subfamily Triculinae, 3 tribes, 11 genera, & 92 species, is larger than contemporaneous endemic freshwater gastropod faunas of centers of endemism, such as lakes Tanganyika & Baikal. The study addresses the issue of how higher taxa arise by analyzing the series of adaptive radiations within the MR Triculinae. The worldwide family Hydrobiidae is polyphyletic & includes 2 distinct lineages, the Hydrobiidae sensu stricto & the Pomatiopsidae with the subfamilies Pomatiopsidae & Triculinae. The differences between the two families were masked by convergence in shell, radula, penis, & operculum. Maps & illus.

Reconciliation Road

Among postwar political leaders, West German Chancellor Willy Brandt played one of the most significant roles in reconciling Germans with other Europeans and in creating the international framework that enabled peaceful reunification in 1990. Based on extensive archival research, this book provides a comprehensive analysis of Brandt’s Ostpolitik from its inception until the end of the Cold War through the lens of reconciliation. Here, Benedikt Schoenborn gives us a Brandt who passionately insisted on a gradual reduction of Cold War hostility and a lasting European peace, while remaining strategically and intellectually adaptable in a way that exemplified the ‘imaginativeness of history’.

Fish Catching Methods of the World

In the sixteen years since the last edition of Von Brant’s classic work was published, fishing and fisheries have undergone vast changes. Not only has there been great progress in the development of new tools, materials and techniques, but the industry has seen an increasing need to address controversial issues such as declining fish stocks, enormous quantities of bycatch and discard and the impact of towed fishing gear on the environment. Fully revised and updated to reflect such changes, the fourth edition of this widely read and popular book offers: A unique, comprehensive survey of the evolution of fishing methods throughout the world Approximately 750 illustrations showing the extensi...
