Overcoming Conflict
Peacebuilding and reconciliation between groups and entire nations that share a violent past are among the toughest, yet most important, challenges for modern societies. Opposing perspectives, disagreements about the interpretation of historical events or even entirely different narratives too often impede processes of rapprochement. How can teaching history contribute to overcoming the demarcation lines of such narratives and resolving historical conflicts that are passed on from generation to generation or renewed, amplified and exploited for present political purposes? This volume comprises twelve case studies—from Central and Eastern Europe to South Africa, from the Middle East to East Asia—exploring stories about successes and failures in the never-ending struggle for peaceful coexistence. The Cultural Legacy of German Colonial Rule
This edited volume explores social, economic, political, and cultural practices generated by African, Asian, and Oceanic individuals and groups within the context and aftermath of German colonialism. Comparative and Transnational History
Since the 1970s West German historiography has been one of the main arenas of international comparative history. It has produced important empirical studies particularly in social history as well as methodological and theoretical reflections on comparative history. During the last twenty years however, this approach has felt pressure from two sources: cultural historical approaches, which stress microhistory and the construction of cultural transfer on the one hand, global history and transnational approaches with emphasis on connected history on the other. This volume introduces the reader to some of the major methodological debates and to recent empirical research of German historians, who do comparative and transnational work.
Charles Valentin Alkan

Judaic culture, the French baroque and German classicism were the main influences on Alkan's musical style, with more radical musical tendencies found in many of the Esquisses op 63. This comprehensive survey takes as its focus a stylistic analysis of Alkan's compositions from the apprentice works to the later 'massed style' etudes; the latter are of considerable length and pianistic difficulty.
