Essays in the History of Linguistics
The present volume follows the author's tradition of bringing together at certain intervals selections of articles which more often than not had previously been published in not easily accessible places, or which had not been published before. These papers do not typically represent mere reprints but in most instances thoroughly revised versions.This volume contains twelve articles organized under three headings, "Programmatic Papers in the History of Linguistics," "Studies in Linguistic Historiography," and "Sketches historiographical and (auto)biographical," plus as an appendix a complete list of Zellig Harris' writings as an illustration of Koerner's penchant for and belief in the importance of good bibliographies as a basis for historical research. While the first two sections, which take up the bulk of the volume, either show the author as an historian engage or demonstrate his work as a historiographer of 19th and 20th century linguistics, the third section is much shorter and less heavy going. Indexes of Biographical Names and of Subjects, Terms & Languages round out the volume, which also contains a number of portraits of linguists and other illustrations.

General Linguistics
Volume I of Edward Sapir’s Collected Works contains the reedition of Sapir’s papers and reviews in general linguistics, in the philosophy of language and linguistics (the origin of language; general semantics; the construction of an international auxiliary language), as well as his articles on ‘language’ and ‘dialect’ written for the Encyclopedia of Social Sciences. The texts have been reedited and supplied with an introductory study and notes. The introductory studies assess Sapir’s contribution to the linguistic study of the various topics dealt with. Volume I also contains a reprint of retrospective appraisals of Sapir’s work in general linguistics written by Zellig Harris and Stanley Newman.
Biographical Memoirs
Biographic Memoirs Volume 87 contains the biographies of deceased members of the National Academy of Sciences and bibliographies of their published works. Each biographical essay was written by a member of the Academy familiar with the professional career of the deceased. For historical and bibliographical purposes, these volumes are worth returning to time and again.
Zellig Harris
The intersecting worlds of Zellig Harris, Noam Chomsky's intellectual and political mentor. In 1995, Robert Barsky met with Noam Chomsky to discuss hiswork-in-progress, Noam Chomsky: A Life of Dissent (MIT Press, 1997). The 32 papers of this volume were selected from 78 papers read at ICHoLS VI, were contributed by linguists from 16 countries of Europe, Asia, and the Americas. They are presented in six sections:1. General Concerns 2. Oriental Linguistics and Related Issues 3. From the Early Middle Ages to the End of the 17th Century 4. On 19th-century European Linguistics 5. On the Verge of Modernity: From the 19th to the 20th Century 6. Contemporary IssuesIndividual topics range from dealing with overriding concerns of linguistic historiography to focusing on specific fields of inquiry within a limited frame and involving a large variety of topical areas. Most of the papers are written in English. The exceptions are one French and two German contributions.
English Historical Linguistics 2008: The history of English verbal and nominal constructions
The fourteen studies selected for this volume all of them peer-reviewed versions of papers presented at the 15th International Conference on English Historical Linguistics 2008 (23 30 August) at the University of Munich investigate syntactic variation and change in the history of English from two perspectives that are crucial to explaining language change, namely the analysis of usage patterns and the social motivations of language change. Documenting the way syntactic elements have changed their combinatory preferences in fine-grained corpus studies renders the opportunity to catch language change "in actu." Phonetics and Phonology
The papers included in the volume "Phonetics and Phonology: Interactions and interrelations" are concerned with some of the multiple possible forms of interactions and interrelations in phonetics and phonology: the phonetic and/or phonological nature of speech patterns, segmental and prosodic interactions, and interactions between segments and features, both in child and in adult language, combining perception and production data, and doing so from theoretically as well as experimentally oriented perspectives. The book is unique in the universe of recent publications for its topic, wide scope and coherent thematic content.
