Introduction to Probability Simulation and Gibbs Sampling with R.

  • Type: Book
  • -
  • Published: 2010

  • Publisher: Unknown

The first seven chapters use R for probability simulation and computation, including random number generation, numerical and Monte Carlo integration, and finding limiting distributions of Markov Chains with both discrete and continuous states. Applications include coverage probabilities of binomial confidence intervals, estimation of disease prevalence from screening tests, parallel redundancy for improved reliability of systems, and various kinds of genetic modeling. These initial chapters can be used for a non-Bayesian course in the simulation of applied probability models and Markov Chains. Chapters 8 through 10 give a brief introduction to Bayesian estimation and illustrate the use of Gi...

Learning Statistics with Real Data

Designed to teach students to apply statistical methods to real problems (a universal need), Bruce Trumbo's concise new book teaches basic statistical principles through their application to real data. The data sets are chosen from fields to which all students can relate, such as marketing, industrial safety, anthropology, psychology, banking, biology, linguistics, public health, geography, physics, sports, geology, and medicine. Throughout the book, the emphasis is on how statistical ideas and methods can be used to illuminate the data, rather than on how the data can be used to illustrate particular statistical methods. Some of the basic statistical methods that prove to be useful include graphical displays, confidence intervals, one and two-sample t-tests, chi-squared analyses of contingency tables, simple and multiple linear regression, correlation, one-way ANOVAs, and block designs. For each data set, students are guided through some basic procedures, usually using MINITAB(tm), then invited to explore the data more extensively on their own, with answers and possible approaches.

Research Ethics

Although psychologists have been relatively reticent in approaching ethical issues as a research topic, some have begun to use psychological principles, theories, and studies to understand and solve ethical dilemmas in their research. This book examines relations between ethics and psychology: the contributions that psychology can make to ethical studies and standards in all areas of human empirical science; and the specific ethics of psychological research. The eleven contributors describe the kinds of ethical problems that arise in psychological research, review current literature with a focus on empirical studies of ethical issues in human research, and identify the theoretical and method...

Database Issues for Data Visualization

This volume presents the proceedings of the International Workshop on Database Issues for Data Visualization, held in conjunction with the IEEE Visualization '93 conference in San Jose, California in October 1993. The book contains 13 technical contributions organized in sections on datamodels; system integration issues; and interaction, user interfaces, and presentation issues. In addition there are three introductory section surveys and an overall workshop description summarizing the whole event. In total, the reader is presented with a thoroughly refereed and carefully edited state-of-the-art report on the hot interdisciplinary topic of database issues and data visualization.
