Urban Disturbances

In Urban Disturbances ordinary characters reveal through their stories the infinite possibilities of our common humanity. A dispassionate lawyer experiences mixed feelings about talking a man out of jumping off a bridge. A respected philanthropist begins to buckle under the weight of a shocking secret. A determined woman crafts a meticulous plan to bag a rich husband. Jack (of beanstalk fame) discovers the maiden in the tower—and happily ever after—aren’t always all that they’re cracked up to be. These characters and others are at once painfully ordinary and deliciously absurd, often relatable and occasionally irredeemable. They navigate complicated relationships and contend with their own self-destructive behaviours, all the while clinging to essential, very human, desires: to be noticed, to be wanted, to be loved, and occasionally, when the situation calls for it, to get what they deserve.

Every Minute Is a Suicide

At once a coming-of-age tale and a baffling tragedy, Every Minute Is a Suicide follows a son’s journey into middle age from boyhood in the aftermath of his father’s mysterious disappearance. In spare but poignant prose, these nineteen stories capture the disappointment that follows on the false promises of childhood as the boy navigates painful family Sunday dinners and his first dance, an Ivy-League education, dead-end jobs and self-sabotaged love affairs. He longs for acceptance but feels at odds with friends, lovers, family and himself. His sorrow and confusion culminate in a profound spiritual crisis in the dark, frigid months of a Yukon winter. With clarity and a keen eye, leavened by dry wit, these stories explore the struggle to make sense of the world—and to find one’s place in it.

In the years between the two world wars of the twentieth century leaders in Western countries worried about a food surplus. The hardships of the Great Depression were intensified by a glut of wheat and consequent low prices on the world market. Yet at the same time nutrition scientists protested that significant proportions of populations, even in affluent countries, were unable to afford a diet adequate for health. Fresh fruits, vegetables, dairy products and meat were out of reach for the poor. This book traces the work of three men who sought to bring together the interests of farmers and the needs of the hungry: scientist and passionate campaigner for better nutrition, John Boyd Orr; Aus...

A gifted but naïve sculptor from Canada settles in Lake Worth, a neighborhood near Palm Beach, attracted by the palm trees and content to sell his work at a nearby flea market. He's joined by his brother, who is attracted to Palm Beach by the money. The brother sells three of the sculptor's pieces through a local art dealer, who creates a market for the work among his wealthy clientele at absurdly inflated prices. When a claim is filed after one of the pieces is stolen, the insurance company's investigation threatens to expose the dealer's questionable tactics and his clients' gullibility. The artist resists temptation and maintains the integrity of his work. He also refuses to create sculptures to order, even if they might fetch far more money than he receives for the pieces he creates for himself. But in an insular world of sordid corruption, where contacts matter more than friendship, money buys acquiescence to corruption, and everything and everyone has a price, he questions the value of his integrity and wonders if he hasn't deluded himself into thinking that there are more important things in life than money.
