Burkina Faso and the CGIAR Centers
Burkina Faso is a country with all the characteristics of underdevelopment. Agriculture is the main activity of 95 percent of the population. The country's economy is predominantly free enterprise. Since February 1985, Burkina Faso has been evolving a national program for agricultural and zootechnical research and has become involved in bilateral and multilateral cooperation. In particular, it has collaborated with the institutes of the CGIAR, but within a new framework reinforcing the capacities for managing the research activities of the national agricultural research system (NARS). Until recently, the NARS has been managed by bilateral and, to a certain extent, multilateral scientific cooperation. Chapter 2 describes the structure of research and chapter 3 outlines the impact the CGIAR centers have had on that structure. It is shown that there is no objective national program of agricultural research in Burkina Faso; those research activities which are being pursued in the country are most often associated with "development projects" supported from abroad. The results of this research have been adopted by the rural community.

Crop Improvement, Adoption and Impact of Improved Varieties in Food Crops in Sub-Saharan Africa
Following on from the CGIAR study by Evenson and Gollin (published by CABI in 2003), this volume provides up-to-date estimates of adoption outcomes and productivity impacts of crop variety improvement research in sub-Saharan Africa. The book reports on the results of the DIIVA Project that focussed on the varietal generation, adoption and impact for 20 food crops in 30 countries. It also compares adoption outcomes in sub-Saharan Africa to those in South Asia, and guides future efforts for global agricultural research

Development of the project-level Women’s Empowerment in Agriculture Index (pro-WEAI)
In this paper, the authors describe the adaptation and validation of a project-level WEAI (or pro-WEAI) that agricultural development projects can use to identify key areas of women’s (and men’s) disempowerment, design appropriate strategies to address identified deficiencies, and monitor project outcomes related to women’s empowerment. The 12 pro-WEAI indicators are mapped to three domains: intrinsic agency (power within), instrumental agency (power to), and collective agency (power with). Policy Framework for Investment in Agriculture in Burkina Faso
Burkina Faso is the first country to apply the OECD Policy Framework for Investment in Agriculture to assess its policies to attract and benefit from investment in the sector. This whole-of-government assessment involved 17 Ministries and institutions, as well as the private sector, and has identified short- to medium-term measures to improve and strengthen the countries capacity for policy design.
