Supply chain risk management (SCRM) is a nascent area emerging from a growing appreciation for supply chain risk by practitioners and by researchers. However, there is diverse perception of research in supply chain risk because these researchers have approached this area from different domains. This paper presents our study of this diversity from the perspectives of operations and supply chain management scholars: First, we reviewed the researchers' output, i.e., the recent research literature. Next, we surveyed two focused groups (members of Supply Chain Thought Leaders and International Supply Chain Risk Management groups) with open-ended questions. Finally, we surveyed operations and supply chain management researchers during the 2009 INFORMS meeting in San Diego. Our findings characterize the diversity in terms of three “gaps”: a definition gap in how researchers define SCRM, a process gap in terms of inadequate coverage of response to risk incidents, and a methodology gap in terms of inadequate use of empirical methods. We also list ways to close these gaps as suggested by the researchers.

We model the strategic as well as the operational dimension of performance of supplier-retailer partnerships in terms of five factors (1) information exchange; (2) trust; (3) joint partnership management; (4) relationship specific assets, and (5) partner asymmetry. Our paired data are from 74 supplier-retailer partnerships in the consumer-packaged goods industry. As a result we found that the factors that best model strategic performance are different from those that best model operational performance. All companies are in Korea and the retailers include international companies like Carrefour, Tesco, and Wal-Mart while suppliers include Coca-Cola, Kimberley-Clark and Nestlé

We analyzed the text of 704 online advertisements of supply chain management jobs for MBA graduates. The content analysis of these job advertisements provided us with a list of supply chain topics, such as inventory management and supply management, and general skills, such as communication and leadership; it also showed the proportion of advertisements requesting these skills. We measured the relative coverage of the same supply chain topics in MBA-level supply chain electives and operations management core courses in 21 of the top 50 business schools in the United States by analyzing the course descriptions and the cases used in these courses. This enabled us to compare the relative import...

This book continues the ICTMA tradition of influencing teaching and learning in the application of mathematical modelling. Each chapter shows how real life problems can be discussed during university lectures, in school classrooms and industrial research. International experts contribute their knowledge and experience by providing analysis, insight and comment whilst tackling large and complex problems by applying mathematical modelling. This book covers the proceedings from the Twelfth International Conference on the Teaching of Mathematical Modelling and Applications. Managing Supply Chain Risk

“Supply Chain Risk Management is an issue that many companies face and yet few companies know how to deal with it in a systematic and pragmatic manner. While avoiding and reducing supply chain risks are certainly preferable, developing ways to restore and stabilize supply chain operations rapidly after a major disruption is critical for managing global supply chains. Sodhi and Tang present important concepts, frameworks, strategies, and analyses that are essential for managing supply chain risks. Not only does this book suggest some practical ways to work with different partners to manage the risks that are present in a global supply chain, it creates a framework that would enable practiti...

You don’t have to outrun the bear ... you just have to outrun the other guy. Often in business we only have to run a bit faster than our competitors to be successful. The same is true in risk management. While we would always like to anticipate and prevent risk from happening, when risk events do occur being faster, flexible, and more responsive than others can make a world of difference. Supply Chain Risk Management: An Emerging Discipline gives you the tools and expertise to do just that. While the focus of the book is on how you can react better and faster than the others, the text also helps you understand how to prevent certain risks from happening in the first place. The authors deta...

Content Analysis of O.R. Job Advertisements to Infer Required Skills

The paper presents an empirical method to infer employers' requirements of operational research (O.R.) skills by analyzing the text of online job ads using content analysis. The method entailed collecting more than a thousand job ads from online sources, creating a hierarchy of sets of O.R.-related words and phrases, and then analyzing the job ads using content analysis software to count the numbers of ads using the hierarchy of words and phrases. The method is particularly well suited for the periodic analysis of job ads to understand changes and trends, and is replicable in that, when carried out using our proposed keywords, it would yield the same results for any set of O.R. job ads.

We explore the link between a company's performance and the extent of its offshoring of IT-enabled services, focusing on large western companies. Our performance measures comprise sales, profit as percentage of sales, profit/employee and sales/employee over 1999-2004. To measure offshoring, we consider the extent to which these companies have offshored (1) software development and other IT-related development and maintenance, (2) business processes such as payroll or claims processing, and (3) call centers. We performed cluster analysis using the three corresponding offshoring variables to obtain broad patterns of offshoring. Then we compared the average performance of the companies in different clusters using ANOVA; did a regression analysis of the performance measures against the extent of offshoring for the three types of offshoring activities; and performed non-parametric correlations within industry sectors. None of these tests indicated a clear link between company performance and the extent of offshoring thus suggesting that further study is needed to understand when to offshore and how best to do it.

Industry Requirements of Operations Research Skills Based on Statistical Content Analysis of Job Ads

We analyzed the text of more than 1,000 advertisements of US-based O.R. jobs to empirically determine the skills industry employers seek in graduates with O.R. backgrounds at the bachelors, masters, PhD, or MBA degree level. We found that employers consistently require modeling, statistics, programming and general analytical skills in an operations management context as their top requirements regardless of sector, function within company, and even degree type as their top requirements. Moreover, these requirements are significantly different for another database of job ads that we analyzed. This indicates that employers perceive O.R. to be unique in comprising a mix of modeling, statistics, programming and general analytical skills but in an operations context. Our analysis also shows that similar to other operations (but non-O.R.) jobs, employers also require communication, leadership, project management, spreadsheet and database and team skills.
