Brazilian Woodcut Prints
First published in 2001. The North East of Brazil is renowned for its rich and vibrant popular culture. The region's festivals, music, poetry and popular religious rituals have attracted increasing interest from around he world in recent decades, and the woodcuts that are the subject of this book are one of the most striking expressions of that cultural dynamism. They have been a significant art form in Brazil since the 1940s, when they began to be produced in large quantities as illustrations for the covers of cheap pamphlets of poetry sold in streets and markets throughout the North East, where they were known as Literatura de Cordel or 'string literature' - so-called because the pamphlets were frequently displayed on cords hung between posts. This work, the first detailed study of Brazilian woodcut prints in the English language deals with the origins and development of the art form, its themes, the traditions and culture of the Brazilian North East, social and political issues, humour and satire, all lavishly illustrated. As this superb study shows, the Brazilian woodcut print has all the power, quickness and wit of a great popular art.

Neste livro o autor conta duas estorias: a pesquisa sobre o cordel e talvez mais importante, as viagens e a peripecias daquele primeiro ano no Brasil.Os dois relatos sao inseparaveis e se complementam. Os capitulos incluem: Recife e o Nordeste, Viagens ao Interior do Nordeste, Pesquisa na Capital Colonial do Brasil - Salvador da Bahia, Pesquisa e Turismo no Rio de Janeiro, Viagens ao Interior desde o Rio de Janeiro includindo Ouro Preto, Congonhas do Campo e uma viagem memoravel em um "gaiola," ou seja, vapor de roda, no Rio Sao Francisco em Minas Gerais e Bahia, e finalmente, pesquisa na Bacia Amazonica, incluindo Belem do Para e Manaus. O relato nao esta em linguagem academica mas em um estilo coloquial de conversa. Adventures of a "Gringo" Researcher in Brazil in the 1960's
Adventures of a "Gringo" Researcher in Brazil in the 1960s or In Search of Cordel is an entertaining and informative account of Professor Curran's first foray in Brazil. In this book he tells two stories: the research to collect cordel and, perhaps more importantly, the travel and the adventures of the year in Brazil. The two are inseparable and complement each other. Chapters include Recife and the Northeast, Travels to the interior of the Northeast, research in Brazil's colonial capital of Salvador da Bahia, research and tourism in Rio de Janeiro, trips to the interior of Rio, including Ouro Preto, Congonhas do Campo, and a memorable trip on a wood-burning stern wheeler on the Sao Francisco River in Minas Gerais and Bahia, and finally, research in the Amazon Basin, including both Belem do Para and Manaus. The account is not in academic language but in a colloquial, conversational style. Curran writes as one sitting down with the reader and telling tales of his travels, and perhaps with the author and reader enjoying a caipirinha, or a Brazilian draft beer choppe as they talk.
The Collection
"The Collection" is meant as an introduction to and summary of Curran's primary and secondary holdings on Brazil's "Literatura de Cordel" now at the Latin American Library of Tulane University. The book relates the story of how the "cordel" collection was put together including telling of its primary sources, the poets themselves and "cordel" stands or "barracas" in cities or towns that sold the broadsides from the mid - 1960s to 2013. Photos and short biographic entries of the poets, printers and publishers are a big part of the story. The lengthy second part of the book is comprised of the lists of the broadsides themselves (accordng to title by the author's choice, author following when known), xeroxed copies of historic titles, and Curran's library of secondary sources dealing with the collection. The author believes that this book has most everything a prospective researcher or "aficionado" needs to know about the Mark J. Curran Collection of "A Literatura de Cordel."
