This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 6th International Conference on Algebraic Methodology and Software Engineering, AMAST'97, held in Sydney, Australia, in December 1997. The volume presents 48 revised full papers selected from an unusually high number of submissions. One of the outstanding features of AMAST is its mix of serious mathematical development of formal methods in software engineering with practical concerns, tools, case studies, and industrial development. The volume addresses all current aspects of formal methods in software engineering and programming methodology, with a certain emphasis on algebraic and logical foundations.

Few topics of scientific enquiry have attracted more attention in the last decade than the origin and evolution of language. Few have offered an equivalent intellectual challenge for interdisciplinary collaborations between linguistics, cognitive science, prehistoric archaeology, palaeoanthropology, genetics, neurophysiology, computer science and robotics. The contributions presented in this volume reflect the multiplicity of interests and research strategy used to tackle this complex issue, summarize new relevant data and emerging theories, provide an updated view of this interdisciplinary venture, and, when possible, seek a future in this broad field of study.
Evidence-Based Treatment Approaches for Suicidal Adolescents

Gendered Identities and Immigrant Language Learning
This ethnographic study of a California English as a Second Language program explores how the gendered life experiences of immigrant adults shape their participation in both the English language classroom and the education of their children, within the contemporary sociohistorical context of Latin American immigration to the United States.
The European Roman d’Analyse
Through close readings of a selection of European novels and novellas written between 1340 and 1827, this study of "analytical fiction" examines how unconsummated love stories probe the frailty of self-knowledge. Tracing elements of what the French call the roman d'analyse in the works of Boccaccio, Marguerite de Navarre, Cervantes, Marie de Lafayette, Samuel Richardson, Jane Austen, and Stendhal, Adele Kudish discusses how the metaphor of unconsummated love is deployed to represent a fundamental lack of insight into the self. Rather than depicting the mind as transparent, analytical fiction deals in the opacity of the mind. Narrators and characters are faced with deception, misprision, doubt, and confusion, leading to self-deception, jealousy, and crises of self. The European Roman d'Analyse reads such epistemological failures as symptoms of a more fundamental preoccupation with the human psyche as un-chartable and bizarre. In this way, the authors of romans d'analyse enact a larger philosophical project: an anatomy of the psyche wherein we are unable-or unwilling-to know ourselves.
Nostratic
The "Nostratic" hypothesis -- positing a common linguistic ancestor for a wide range of language families including Indo-European, Uralic, and Afro-Asiatic -- has produced one of the most enduring and often intense controversies in linguistics. Overwhelmingly, though, both supporters of the hypothesis and those who reject it have not dealt directly with one another's arguments. This volume brings together selected representatives of both sides, as well as a number of agnostic historical linguists, with the aim of examining the evidence for this particular hypothesis in the context of distant genetic relationships generally.The volume contains discussion of variants of the Nostratic hypothesis (A.
