This book is centered around higher algebraic structures stemming from the work of Murray Gerstenhaber and Jim Stasheff that are now ubiquitous in various areas of mathematics— such as algebra, algebraic topology, differential geometry, algebraic geometry, mathematical physics— and in theoretical physics such as quantum field theory and string theory. These higher algebraic structures provide a common language essential in the study of deformation quantization, theory of algebroids and groupoids, symplectic field theory, and much more. Each contribution in this volume expands on the ideas of Gerstenhaber and Stasheff. This book presents a number of important contributions focusing on harmonic analysis and representation theory of Lie groups. All were originally presented at the 5th Tunisian–Japanese conference “Geometric and Harmonic Analysis on Homogeneous Spaces and Applications”, which was held at Mahdia in Tunisia from 17 to 21 December 2017 and was dedicated to the memory of the brilliant Tunisian mathematician Majdi Ben Halima. This book collects a series of important works on noncommutative harmonic analysis on homogeneous spaces and related topics. All the authors participated in the 6th Tunisian-Japanese conference "Geometric and Harmonic Analysis on homogeneous spaces and Applications" held at Djerba Island in Tunisia during the period of December 16-19, 2019. The aim of this conference and the five preceding Tunisian-Japanese meetings was to keep up with the active development of representation theory interrelated with various other mathematical fields, such as number theory, algebraic geometry, differential geometry, operator algebra, partial differential equations, and mathematical physics. The present volume is dedicated to the memory of Takaaki Nomura, who organized the series of Tunisian-Japanese conferences with great effort and enthusiasm. Noncommutative differential geometry is a novel approach to geometry, aimed in part at applications in physics. It was founded in the early eighties by the 1982 Fields Medalist Alain Connes on the basis of his fundamental works in operator algebras. It is now a very active branch of mathematics with actual and potential applications to a variety of domains in physics ranging from solid state to quantization of gravity. The strategy is to formulate usual differential geometry in a somewhat unusual manner, using in particular operator algebras and related concepts, so as to be able to plug in noncommutativity in a natural way. Algebraic tools such as K-theory and cyclic cohomology and homology play an important role in this field. It is an important topic both for mathematics and physics.
