Vegetation Structure and Function at Multiple Spatial, Temporal and Conceptual Scales
This commemorative volume of invited papers in vegetation science covers a full range of topics, objectives, methods and applications, including conservation and management tasks. These require study at different temporal and spatial scales, often simultaneously. Methodology is important in science, since it responds to particular questions and raises others. It is also closely related to the scale of investigation. Chapters in this book illustrate this interdependence, even in basic tasks such as vegetation sampling and description, measurements and mapping. Individual chapters present globally applicable systems, regional syntheses and local analyses and applications, plus conceptual methodologies, including currently debated hot topics. Vegetation types treated include tropical rainforests, temperate forests, dry steppes and scrub and local turf, sedge and moss communities. There are also chapters on re-vegetation, woodlot management, ecology of an invasive species, and trajectory planning in conservation. This book will be useful to both students and practitioners, for its reviews and examples and as a potential textbook suitable for graduate-level courses and seminars.
Plant Biology for Cultural Heritage
Brings together wide-ranging scientific contributions from those who have studied the biological degradation of cultural heritages. It tackles both general topics (mechanisms of biodeterioration; correlation between biodeterioration and environment; and destructive organisms) and specific ones (the problems presented by different materials, environments, climatic conditions, and geographic settings). The contributors also discuss ways to diagnose, prevent, and control deterioration.
Giorgio Bazzichelli. L'uomo e lo scienziato
Giorgio Bazzichelli (1924-2011) è stato professore di Botanica e di Algologia alla Sapienza Università di Roma. Figura speciale oltre che per l’originalità del pensiero scientifico anche per la passione per la musica e la letteratura, è stato ricordato durante una giornata organizzata dal Dipartimento di Biologia Ambientale il 19 aprile 2012. I resoconti della giornata, ora pubblicati in questa collana, propongono, come scrive nella prefazione Gianni Felicini, “il ritratto di un professore d’università e uomo di scienza … descritto non nella forma usuale di mesto necrologio infarcito di citazioni seriose, ma come una storia leggera, viva, ricca di eventi e di divertenti aneddoti in cui il lettore può ritrovare persino un po’ di se stesso”. In appendice viene presentata una scelta di brani tratti dai diari che scrisse tra il 1953 e il 1965.
E Motion
The aim of the EMotion project is to combine both technological aspects and respect for the territory and its history. The main axis considered in this project is the Asmara-Massawa road. The challenges of a new mobility in this part of Eritrea could be met and overcome by preserving the pre-existing historic infrastructure: an extraordinary and vulnerable cultural heritage, consisting of a unique road and a railway, crossing natural and cultural landscapes and connecting archaeological, historical-artistic and architectural sites; the road itself is a summation of artefacts and monuments to be protected and enhanced. A multidisciplinary team, including archaeologists, architects, geologists and engineers has contributed to the research. The vision of the project represents an ideal and real bridge to enhance the transferring of goods, ideas, knowledge and values and promote the connection of people.
