The English Language and Anglo-American Culture: Its Impact on Spanish Language and Society explores the effects of globalisation on Spanish language and society. It analyses the impact of the English language and Anglo-American culture on Spanish language and culture. This book compiles four different studies that provide evidence of the increasingly pervasive presence of English in Spanish daily life. The areas covered include: analyses of shop windows from different shopping centres in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain, which display Christmas greetings in English, rather than Spanish; exploration of some of the most frequently used techniques to translate the titles of Anglo-American films; a study of the use of anglicisms in the Spanish edition of the film magazine Cahiers du Cinema; research on the attitudes of a sample of Spanish students towards English; reflection on the emergence of a certain sense of identity towards English and Anglo-American culture among Spaniards; and some activities that invite reflection on the issues dealt with throughout the book.
Input a Word, Analyze the World represents current perspectives on Corpus Linguistics (CL) from a variety of linguistic subdisciplines. Corpus Linguistics has proven itself an excellent methodology for the study of language variation and change, and is well-suited for interdisciplinary collaboration, as shown by the studies in this volume. Its title is inspired by the use of CL to assess language in different registers and with a variety of purposes. This collection contains thirty contributions by scholars in the field from across the globe, dealing with current topics on corpus production and corpus tools; lexical analysis, phraseology and grammar; translation and contrastive linguistics; and language learning. This volume provides a picture of state-of-the-art studies on terminology at the European level. Addressing a range of linguistic and cultural topics, it illustrates the diversity of terminological approaches, uses and solutions. A variety of national contexts and areas, from economics and law through to gender, environment and education, is explored to illustrate emerging national issues and practices in view of measuring and assessing them against European standards. The book discusses the selection of languages and cultural attitudes that characterize European Union countries, challenging and productive as they can be. It highlights the need to acknowledge differences in specific domains and the necessity to evaluate national policies (or indeed lack of policies) regarding terminological issues, and facilitate communication and dissemination of knowledge.
Linguistic taboo has been relegated for a long time to a peripheral position within Linguistics, due to its social stigmatization and inherent linguistic complexity. Recently, though, there has been a renewed interest in revisiting the phenomenon, especially from cognitive frameworks.
