The iconography of war and disaster have shaped the first years of the twenty-first century, both in the United States and throughout the world. On the Margins brings together a culturally diverse group of international artists whose work engages the platitudes associated with troubling themes, while addressing contemporary social and political conditions through a wide spectrum of styles and media. The exhibition aims in part at underscoring the contrast between the realities of disaster and how they are presented--what we see and what we don't see--through the lens of today's media. Created in the past seven years, all of the works included in On the Margins consider the ways in which war ...

Designing the Modern City

A comprehensive new survey tracing the global history of urbanism and urban design from the industrial revolution to the present. Written with an international perspective that encourages cross-cultural comparisons, leading architectural and urban historian Eric Mumford presents a comprehensive survey of urbanism and urban design since the industrial revolution. Beginning in the second half of the 19th century, technical, social, and economic developments set cities and the world’s population on a course of massive expansion. Mumford recounts how key figures in design responded to these changing circumstances with both practicable proposals and theoretical frameworks, ultimately creating w...

On the Very Edge

  • Categories: Art

Revealing a vibrant and intertwined artistic scene in the Balkans On the Very Edge brings together fourteen empirical and comparative essays about the production, perception, and reception of modernity and modernism in the visual arts, architecture, and literature of interwar Serbia (1918–1941). The contributions highlight some idiosyncratic features of modernist processes in this complex period in Serbian arts and society, which emerged ‘on the very edge’ between territorial and cultural, new and old, modern and traditional identities. With an open methodological framework this book reveals a vibrant and intertwined artistic scene, which, albeit prematurely, announced interests in plu...

All of the artists included in Printmaking are 'self-published' in that they print their own images in editions of fewer than fifty impressions or they execute works that are one-of-a-kind in nature. In every case, the artist is responsible for the entire process -- from conceptualisation to design, production, and eventual distribution. Each chapter presents an overview of the artists' lives, a statement about their aesthetic intent, an explanation of the techniques used in their work, and black and white as well as colour reproductions of their prints. In all cases, the artists have exhibited a strong expertise, commitment, and a reverence for the print tradition. Various processes employed by the artists, such as lithography, intaglio, paper-making, silkscreen, and collagraphy, represent the different techniques, styles, uses of media, and attitudes toward the production of prints. By incorporating written statements from all of the individuals featured in this publication, E C Cunningham has enabled the individuals to speak for themselves, effectively capturing their knowledge and their unique personalities.

Building Envelopes

Few parts of a building work harder than its envelope (also known as its facade). The envelope is the part of the building most visible from the outside--so it should be visually appealing--but it can also have the biggest effect on the well-being and safety of its occupants--so the envelope should be help heat and cool the building, allow light into it, and provide necessary structure. Too often, a building's envelope is more aesthetically striking than functional, or vice versa. A great building envelope, though, architecturally integrates all of its elements.
