Crossing Racial Borders: The Epistemic Empowerment of the Subaltern explores critically the racial, socioeconomic, historical, and political contemporary conditions of the lived experiences of the subaltern, the oppressed. Through the lens of the decolonial school of thought developed by Latin American thinkers and scholars, this text focuses on the identification and analysis of the subalterns’ praxis of living, thinking, knowing, and doing. The contributors delve into the subalterns’ agency at work and how their [inter]subjective/reflective actions, gestures, and thoughts are deep-seated in subverting and resisting the material and symbolic coloniality of power's exploitation, categorization, and oppression. Drawing from sociological, anthropological, literary, and historical approaches, a new set of ideas and rationalities uncovers and challenges the complicities of modernity/coloniality (power-pattern-matrix) through new narratives and discursive epistemic-frames of empowerment and agency.
With these essays, historians contend that emancipation was not something that simply happened to enslaved peoples but rather something in which they actively participated. O contato entre a autora e a comunidade ocorreu após a defesa de sua dissertação de mestrado, sob minha orientação, em que pesquisou uma série de levantes de pessoas escravizadas, na vila de Guaraparim, entre 1811 e 1814, contra o novo administrador das fazendas. A revolta, conhecida como República Negra, compõe a narrativa dos atuais moradores sobre as origens da comunidade, localizada nas proximidades da Fazenda do Campo, palco das ações dos escravizados no início do Oitocentos. E vemos que ainda hoje a comunidade resiste, seja tentando preservar seus modos de vida tradicionais, seja na luta pelo acesso aos seus direitos e às políticas públicas.

Slavery and the Atlantic slave trade are among the most heinous crimes against humanity committed in the modern era. Yet, to this day no former slave society in the Americas has paid reparations to former slaves or their descendants. Ana Lucia Araujo shows that these calls for reparations have persevered over a long and difficult history. She traces the ways in which enslaved and freed individuals have conceptualized the idea of reparations since the 18th century in petitions, correspondence, pamphlets, public speeches, slave narratives, and judicial claims. Taking the reader through the era of slavery, emancipation, post-abolition, and the present day and drawing on the voices of various of enslaved peoples and their descendants, the book illuminates the multiple dimensions of the demands of reparations. This new edition boasts a new chapter on the global impact of the Black Lives Matter movement, the seismic effect of the killing of George Floyd, calls for university reparations and the dismantling of statues.
