Leading critics from Britain, Canada, and the US examine modernism's imaginative rethinkings of sex, gender, and sexuality. Original essays show how modernism intersects with the suffragette movement, technological change and its effects on women and labor, the growth of pseudo-scientific writings, and the burgeoning lesbian and gay movement. They show how modernism upsets the fixities of gender and sexuality through its fascination with ambiguities, marginality, and the crossing of borders. Sex reformers and sex changers, unsexed storytellers, typewriters, femme and butch experimenters, suffragettes in wide-brimmed hats, musical and dramatic pageants, adolescent delinquents, sunbathers, and dancing indigenes all play a role in the heterodox and varied modernism revealed in these essays.
Forgotten Engagements
This study is the first to examine the contribution made by women writers to politically committed literature in 1930s France. Its purpose is to bring to light the work of female authors of left-wing fiction whose novels are comparable to those of well-known male practitioners of littérature engagée, such as Paul Nizan and Louis Aragon. It analyses the work of Madeleine Pelletier, Simone Téry, Edith Thomas, Henriette Valet and Louise Weiss in the context of the inter-war models of committed literature in relation to which they were produced. Consideration of this body of fictional texts, not previously brought together by literary historians, shows how women were able to relate to fiction and to politics in inter-war France. Situating the novels within their social, historical, literary and political environment, the book contributes to the literary and cultural history of twentieth century France. The analysis of inter-war political writing by women calls into question the criteria against which women’s writing has been evaluated by feminist scholarship.

Clare L. Taylor investigates the problematic question of female fetishism within modernist women's writing, 1890-1950. Drawing on gender and psychoanalytic theory, she re-examines the works of Sarah Grand, Radclyffe Hall, H.D., Djuna Barnes, and Anaïs Nin in the context of clinical discourses of sexology and psychoanalysis to present an alternative theory of female fetishism, challenging the perspective that denies the existence of the perversion in women.

Modernism, Labour and Selfhood in British Literature and Culture, 1890-1930
Shiach examines the ways in which labour was experienced and represented between 1890 and 1930. There is a critical tradition in literary and historical studies that sees the impact of modernity on human labour in terms of intensification and alienation.
