At a time when sentiment was extremely popular, Carrie Jacobs-Bond won the hearts and minds of millions all over the world with songs like "The End of a Perfect Day" and "I Love You Truly." Many of her compositions are still sung to celebrate special occasions because, for many of us, they evoke the memory of an earlier, happier America. Carrie, a widow with a child and a gift of song, struggled hard to achieve success. Her sincerity disarmed criticism, helped her survive initial failure, and ultimately became the best publicity she had. her songs were popularized through recitals, concerts, band performances, and vaudeville acts. As life became increasingly complex and uncertain, her tunes about doggies and dollies and the setting sun brought cheer to her admirers who were reassured by thoughts of home and country, loyalty and hope. President Hoover acclaimed her compositions as "heart son s that express the love and longings, sadness and gladness of all peoples everywhere."
