A GOOD DAY TO START is a collection of twenty literary short stories bursting with chaos, plot complications, humor, and hope. From repentant prison inmates, to hotshot scientists, frustrated Wall Streeters, and a grieving park ranger, these characters, who are nearing the end of their ropes, need to change course. And while settings, styles, and viewpoints contrast sharply, they cope with shifting circumstances in similar ways. They pretend, disengage, and resist until an unexpected spark tests their courage. Transitions can be rough, but these complementary stories mark the way, reminding readers that renewal is an universal struggle. We're scared, so we find angles and short-cuts, or we s...

Midori by Moonlight

Midori Saito's dream seems about to come true. Too independent for Japanese society, Midori is a young woman who has always felt like a stranger in her native land. So when she falls in love with Kevin, an American English teacher, she readily agrees to leave home and start a new life with him in San Francisco--as his fiancée. Kevin seems to be the perfect man. That is, until he dumps her for his blonde ex-fiancée, whom Midori never even knew existed. Midori is left on her own, with just a smattering of fractured English, not much cash, and a fiancée visa set to expire in sixty days. Unable to face the humiliation of telling her parents she's been jilted, and not wanting to give up on her "American Dream," Midori realizes she's in for quite a challenge. Her only hope is her new acquaintance (and potential landlord) Shinji, a successful San Francisco graphic artist and amateur moon gazer who fled Japan after a family tragedy. And eventually, Midori surprises even herself as she proves she will do almost anything to hang on to her dream of a new life.

The tumultuous life and career of a woman who fought gender bias on multiple fronts—in theory and in practice, for herself and for us all. “Myra Strober's Sharing the Work is the memoir of a woman who has learned that 'having it all' is only possible by 'sharing it all,' from finding a partner who values your work as much as you do, to fighting for family-friendly policies. You will learn that finding allies is crucial, blending families after divorce is possible, and that there is neither a good time nor a bad time to have children. Both women and men will find a friend in these pages.” —Gloria Steinem Myra Strober became a feminist on the Bay Bridge, heading toward San Francisco. I...

Burnt Pot Island

Catherine Williams earns her living shucking oysters in a filthy, mosquito-infested shed, like all Geechee women in Pin Point, Georgia, in 1904. Even though she graduates eighth grade and yearns to escape, none of the men whose children she bears can help her. Prohibition becomes law, and rum-running gangs invade the deserted sea islands, bribing the sheriff and the mayor of nearby Savannah, who promise unheard-of sums of money to the impoverished Geechees to do their dirty work, and who lure Catherine's son Willie into the business. When the owner of the oyster cannery makes an unwanted sexual advance toward Catherine's daughter Licia, Catherine is forced to hide Licia with her son on Skidaway Island, the epicenter of fine-liquor smuggling and manufacture of moonshine. She struggles to keep her job and home, both of which depend on pleasing her boss. The mayor entices Licia into sex and rum-running, building her a secret house on Burnt Pot Island, where even voodoo and Christian prayer aren't enough to keep her safe. Federal agents close in for a raid, forcing Catherine to choose between abandoning everything she has worked for and saving her children.

Farm Animal Portraits

This is the first comprehensive study of an exceptional period in livestock experimentation and of the social and economic aspirations which led to the commissioning of these paintings. Over four hundred illustrations (325 in full colour) provide a unique record of rare or extinct animals which once grazed these lands. This book will have a wide general appeal and will particularly attract enthusiasts of folk and primitive art as well as those whose interest is in rare and vanished breeds.
