Autism Spectrum Disorders: From Genotypes to Phenotypes

This Research Topic covers the pathogenetic processes in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) that underpin the translation of genetic vulnerability to clinically significant symptoms. Available research data in ASD suggests that it is a neural connectivity disorder and that the social communication and related neurobehavioural symptoms result from reduced synchronization between key "social brain" regions. These interconnected neural systems can be understood through the relationship between functionally relevant anatomic areas and neurochemical pathways, the programming of which are genetically modulated during neurodevelopment and mediated through a range of epigenetic and environmental modulat...

Enjoyment as Enriched Experience

Enjoyment as Enriched Experience

This book has two main tasks: (1) to call attention to the special challenges presented by our experience of affect—all varieties of pleasure and pain—and (2) to show how these challenges can be overcome by an “enrichment approach” that understands affect as the enrichment or deterioration of conscious activity as a whole. This “enrichment approach” draws from Alfred North Whitehead as well as the pragmatists John Dewey and William James, all of whom thought of affect as a fundamental aspect of experience rather than a special class of feelings. It also draws from recent scientific research that suggests that the dynamic repertoire of consciousness can change, effectively expanding and contracting our capacity to feel. Weaving these perspectives together, the book develops a theory that accounts for the peculiar phenomenology of affect and sheds new light on a diverse range of experiences, from everyday pleasures and pains to the special satisfactions of the arts and religious festivity. At the same time, it presents a fresh and distinctively affect-centered perspective on the nature of consciousness.

Honeybee Neurobiology and Behavior

The book is a sequel of a similar book, edited by Randolf Menzel and Alison Mercer, “Neurobiology and Behavior of Honeybees”, published in 1987. It is a “Festschrift” for the 70th birthday of Randolf Menzel, who devoted his life to the topic of the book. The book will include an open commentary for each section written by Randolf Menzel, and discussed with the authors. The written contributions take their inspiration from a symposium on the topic, with all the authors, that was held in Berlin in summer 2010

The Complex Architecture and Healing of Traumatic Brain Injuries

This book explores the complex architecture and healing ecology involved in the treatment of traumatic brain injuries. This book also includes explorations of other maladies of the brain and mind (including strokes, brain infections, and serious mental illnesses, among others). Each chapter presents a different case study, using doctor-patient dialogues as a way of understanding both the injury and its treatment. This is a ground-breaking approach to understanding and healing insults and disruptions to the brain’s ability to function effectively. The book also emphasizes that injuries to the brain and mind are far more prevalent than has previously been recognized. It also places particular emphasis on the process of putting a person’s “sense of self” back together following these types of injuries – which is no easy task!

Gentle Nutrition

Intuitive eating is a non-diet approach to healthy eating that focuses on unlearning diet cultures toxic messaging so you can build a healthier relationship with food and your body and focus on health promoting behaviors as opposed to weight loss. There is a common perception that intuitive eating approaches are also anti-nutrition, but that’s simply not the case. In this book, registered dietitian Rachael Hartley looks at the role of gentle nutrition in intuitive eating. She explores why diets don’t work – and make you eat less healthfully, why weight doesn’t equal health, and how to approach nutrition in a flexible way, with the goal of promoting wellbeing, not reaching for an arbi...
