This is a collection of the letters of Charles Henry Brown, a pioneer aeronaut, and the correspondence he received from fellow balloonists and early aviation enthusiasts. Brown had formed a singular relationship with the eminent aeronaut Henry Coxwell, for whom he acted as occasional agent. Coxwell in turn supported Brown in his aviation efforts and was responsible for him obtaining a position as a balloonist in Australia. The letters record the endeavours, frustrations and occasional double dealing of the early aeronauts, and highlight the peculiar reactions of the general public to the novelty of aerial transportation in the mid-nineteenth century"--

"This project is a combination of creative/literary production (The unfortunate endeavours of Charles Henry Brown) and an exegesis (Finding the man : telling the story). It has as its objectives the preparation and presentation of a substantial literay work in the form of a biography of Charles Henry Brown, an Englishman who settled in Australia and was one of the country's pioneer aeronauts. The exegesis sets out the lines of enquiry pursued in the production of the creative work and in so doing gives an analysis and justification of the manner in which the narrative has been formulated." -- abstract.

Narrative of the Life of Henry Box Brown

In 1849, Henry Brown escaped from slavery by shipping himself in a three-foot-by-two-foot wooden crate from Virginia to an anti-slavery office in Philadelphia. Twenty-seven hours and 350 miles later, Brown stepped out of his box to begin a new life. This is his memoir, originally published in 1851 in England, as fresh and compelling today as it was 150 years ago. This extraordinary narrative paints an indelible portrait of life in slavery. With a keen sense of irony, Brown examines the "peculiar institution"--from the hypocrisy of slave-owning Christian preachers, to the system of bribery that forced slaves to purchase the rights to their own belongings, to the practice of separating slave families with no warning. The story also describes one of the most audacious, creative escapes ever completed. A classic slave narrative, it makes for unforgettable reading.

Narrative of the Life of Henry Box Brown, Written by Himself

It is the most celebrated escape in the history of American slavery. Henry Brown had himself sealed in a three-foot-by-two-foot box and shipped from Richmond, Virginia, to Philadelphia, a twenty-seven-hour journey to freedom. In Narrative of the Life of Henry Box Brown, Written by Himself, Brown not only tells the story of his famed escape, but also recounts his later life as a black man making his way through white American and British culture. Most important, he paints a revealing portrait of the reality of slavery, of the wife and children sold away from him, the home to which he could not return, and his rejection of the slaveholders' religion--painful episodes that fueled his desire for freedom. This edition comprises the most complete and faithful representation of Brown's life, fully annotated for the first time. John Ernest also provides an insightful introduction that places Brown's life in its historical setting and illuminates the challenges Brown faced in an often threatening world, both before and after his legendary escape.
