The British in Argentina
Drawing on largely unexplored nineteenth- and twentieth-century sources, this book offers an in-depth study of Britain’s presence in Argentina. Its subjects include the nineteenth-century rise of British trade, merchants and explorers, of investment and railways, and of British imperialism. Spanning the period from the Napoleonic Wars until the end of the twentieth century, it provides a comprehensive history of the unique British community in Argentina. Later sections examine the decline of British influence in Argentina from World War I into the early 1950s. Finally, the book traces links between British multinationals and the political breakdown in Argentina of the 1970s and early 1980s, leading into dictatorship and the Falklands War. Combining economic, social and political history, this extensive volume offers new insights into both the historical development of Argentina and of British interests overseas.

Saline and Alkaline Soils in Latin America
This book provides the first comprehensive overview of saline and alkaline soils in Latin America, known for having one of the most extensive surface of salt-affected soils in the world. It is organized along two main axes: soils and vegetation. The book discusses the occurrence of such soils in the region, focusing mainly in management strategies for their sustainable use, and it presents accounts of natural vegetation and crops in the various environments of the region. Social impacts of such conditions and ongoing projects to overcome them are considered. Likewise, the book highlights physiological mechanisms that are responsible for the negative effects these soils exert on crops and forest resources and determine vegetation distribution in them. Plant breeding challenges and new perspectives for such environments are discussed. Technologies such as irrigation and drainage are included. The readership includes soil and plant scientists, as well as policy makers.
Plant polyamines in stress and development
Polyamines are small aliphatic polycations which have been involved in key stress and developmental processes in plants. In the recent years, compelling genetic and molecular evidences point to polyamines as essential metabolites required for resistance to drought, freezing, salinity, oxidative stress among other type of abiotic and biotic stresses. In addition to their role as stress-protective compounds, polyamines participate in key developmental processes mediated by specific signaling pathways or in cross-regulation with other plant hormones. Our Research Topic aims to integrate the multiple stress and developmental regulatory functions of polyamines in plants under a genetic, molecular and evolutionary perspective with special focus on signaling networks, mechanisms of action and metabolism regulation.
