The England Coast Path

In Spring 2020, one of the smallest nations in the world is opening the longest continuous coastal path in the world: the England Coast Path. This guidebook will cover the whole length. Emsworth has a unique character. The marketplace at the centre of the town is a reminder of Emsworth's beginnings: as a small hamlet with a weekly market to serve the needs of farmers. It later developed as a centre for milling, fishing, shipbuilding and coastal trade. By the 18th century Emsworth was a thriving port. This highly readable account shows how the harbour helped to shape and define the community. Generations of Emsworth families earned their livings as fishermen, boat builders, sail and rope makers, or as seamen on vessels engaged in trade. The Emsworth oyster had national renown for its flavour during the 19th century. Emsworth's heritage is still in evidence: mill buildings have been converted to new uses and the two millponds have been preserved. Efforts are being made to restore the Terror, an Emsworth fishing boat built in the 19th century. This fascinating account of Emsworth's past is enhanced by a wide selection of superb illustrations, and will interest all those who live in and love the area.
