Back in print--the standard work on Heino Engel's structure systems. The hundreds of drawings and photographs reproduced in this hardback volume offer almost endless variations on the many structural systems that can keep buildings together: within a few pages of one another, tents, domes and cubes are shown supported by poles, cables, ribs, rafters and beams. Engel's presentation and explanation of this highly complex material differs fundamentally from others' work on the subject in that he focuses entirely upon the functions and design effects of these mechanisms, without regard for technical details: More than an engineering text, this is a catalogue of ideas and forms for architects and dreamers, a David Macaulay book for adults. Structure Systems skips over more commonly treated special designs and completed buildings for typical, representative and surprising shapes. As a reference work or daydream material, it is an indispensable repertoire of forms.

Lucia Moholy (1894-1989)

Photographer, writer and intellectual, Lucia Moholy (born Lucia Schulz, Karolinenthal, Prague, 1894 - Zollikon, Zurich, 1989) is a central figure in the 20th century history of photography, although the fame of her husband, the renowned artist László Moholy-Nagy, overshadowed her work for a long time. Through her photographs, an example of the German avant-garde and of the Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity), it is possible to understand the complexity of her artistic personality and to reconstruct the role she played in the cultural history of the past century. Her major photographic work is on the Bauhaus: pictures of the school, of teachers, objects and furniture are considered as true icons of modern times. The essays published in this volume allow us to understand and outline Lucia Moholy's complex artistic personality, thus giving her the correct place she is due in 20th century culture. 0Exhibition: Museo MAX, Chiasso, Italy (24.11.2012-31.1.2013).

The Sea as a Space of Artistic Experience Ju]rgen Claus's (b. 1935, Berlin; lives and works in Aachen and Baelen, Belgium) oeuvre encompasses paintings, films, light and solar installations, and underwater art. He is also a prolific writer on art, with theoretical works that have sold over 100,000 copies. "Ju]rgen Claus is the first one to see the ocean through an artist's rather than a scientist's lens," Michel Ragon writes. In this book, Claus intertwines his experiences working on the fascinating underwater installations with a pressing contemporary concern: the global efforts to restore the seas to health. The publication combines visual art, architecture, poetry, and music for a multifaceted engagement with the world's oceans. Ju]rgen Claus majored in theater studies at the Universität Mu]nchen and was a research associate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and professor of media art at the Kunsthochschule fu]r Medien Köln, Cologne.

Arantxa Etcheverria's (b. 1975, France; lives and works in Bucharest) creative practice encompasses painting, sculpture, performance, photography, and film. Since 2006, she has been especially interested in modernist architecture, a ubiquitous sight in her adopted country, Romania. Blending rationalism with speculation, the artist draws on historical references including post-Communist turbo architecture, Op art, and minimalism for works that balance between figuration and abstraction, construction and deconstruction. This book documents Etcheverria's more recent panel paintings and installations, seen in interaction with actors in monochrome costumes. With essays by the Paris-based Romanian curator and critic Ami Barak and the art historian and curator Alina Serban.
