Conversations with the Self

"CONVERSATIONS WITH THE SELF develops three perspectives: that of two works produced in contemporary times that looks back to the years of Mussolini's and Franco's regimes - focusing on HabĂamos ganado la guerra (2007) by Esther Tusquets and L'Alba di un Mondo Nuovo (2002) by Alberto Asor Rosa; that of two works produced after a few decades from the collapse of the regimes - concentrating on Con la miel en los labios (1997) by Esther Tusquets and La Storia (1974) by Elsa Morante; and finally that of two works produced directly following the end of the regimes - concentrating on L'Isola di Arturo (1957) by Elsa Morante and El amor es un juego solitario (1979) by Esther Tusquets. This study defines two innovative concepts in literature: 'implicit' and 'explicit' suffering. The analysis of these two realities is integrated by a third one, namely an intermediate perspective that includes elements of 'explicit' and 'implicit' suffering and that sheds light upon the complex process of transition from 'implicit' to 'explicit' suffering, in which the concept of acquisition of awareness by the characters will be involved"--Provided by publisher.

Being Christian: New Devotional Readings

Being Christian: New Devotional Readings has St. Paul's ambitious goal: to present every person perfect in Christ. With that in mind, this wide-ranging devotional is full of strong texts and short teaching, all organized into bite-size readings. You will find applicable wisdom on every page, as Being Christian is the product of Jim Wilson's practical advice and scriptural meditation over the past thirty-five years. Throughout every chapter you will read a huge variety of powerful, concentrated Scriptures, covering fundamental topics like prayer, evangelism, everyday holiness, joy, love, family, and (of course) what it means to be a Christian. "Strong teaching makes strong Christians. And it makes soft-hearted, tender, loving Christians. But soft teaching makes hard, callused Christians. Soft teaching is for people who have itching ears. They do not wish to have their lives interfered with." ~ Jim Wilson, from the Preface

Nomadic people, have over the years, been subject to prejudice and negative thinking by sedentarised societies as well as by political and legislative systems. It was finally only in the 1970s that international lawyers began to reassess the status of these peoples, to recognise their rights and above all, to protect them. In his thesis Marco Moretti defines the relationship between nomadic people and law-makers between the 16th and 19th centuries. This is followed by establishing the evolution of the human rights movement, recognising peoples who are not state-entities and therefore giving place for the existence of nomadic people worldwide.

Early Christian Poetry

This collection of essays deals with the rise and development of early Christian poetry, discussing its techniques and its theoretical foundation. The individual papers concern specimina of Hebrew, Syriac, Greek and Latin poetry and study the various and partly conflicting traditions from which it originated. The biblical examples, e.g. of the Psalms, held great authority, but on the other hand it was impossible to break away from the models of classical Greco-Roman poetry, although these were deemed dangerous because of the pagan content and excessive cult of literary art. The book shows how the problems involved were solved in different ways, which justified the use of pagan literary accomplishments for singing the praises of the Lord.
