Deconstructing Evangelicalism

"This book is electric! Hübner goes about Deconstructing Evangelicalism with the skills available only to someone formerly embedded in the apologetics-oriented, take-no-prisoners, Calvinist-Piperian-Brownian conservative evangelical subculture. Brilliant. Learned. Passionate. Creative. Angry. Hopeful? Maybe. You must read it for yourself and find out. I will be studying this book for a long time to come." -DAVID GUSHEE Past President, American Academy of Religion and Distinguished University Professor of Ethics, Mercer University "This book is special: at once incendiary and charming, you are invited into the world of Christian fundamentalism, in all of its glory and complexities and trauma...

A Case for Female Deacons

A Case for Female Deacons

The subject of "women in ministry" has attracted considerable attention in the past half-century of Western Christianity. While much of the debate has centered around ordination and female pastors, few works have focused specifically on female deacons. A Case for Female Deacons challenges reformed and evangelical Christians to accept the legitimacy of female deacons without getting distracted by the more controversial debate about female pastors. The heart of the book contains a thorough exegesis of key passages and a fascinating look at what the church believed about deacons in centuries past. As a graduate thesis, readers will find a cohesive, logical argument supported by a wealth of scholarly research. As a contemporary work in theology, many complementarians and traditionalists will be challenged to revise their position. The end result is a compelling biblical, theological, and historical case for female deacons.

Frederik Poulsen investigates the role of the Old Testament in biblical theology. Analyzing the works of Brevard Childs and Hans Hubner, he addresses main issues regarding the different versions of the Old Testament (the Hebrew Bible and the Greek Septuagint) and the significance of the New Testament's use of the Old. The author explores the interpretative implications of these issues by focusing extensively on Isaiah 42:1-9. The Hebrew version as such is ambiguous regarding the servant figure being portrayed, his identity, and his task. The Septuagint renders several key terms and statements differently and the reception of the passage in the New Testament reveals a manifold of diverse interpretations. Common to all versions is the servant's role as a mediator between God and the nations. Frederik Poulsen shows that this central task is constantly being reapplied to new servant figures.

"Jamin Hubner deserves our gratitude for compiling this very helpful collection of essays, quotations, and debates by leading presuppositionalists (some of which material is only available in this volume). The Portable Presuppositionalist should prove invaluable to anyone who wants to better understand the origins of presuppositional apologetics, its theological foundations, and what it looks like in practice." - Dr. James Anderson (Ph.D, Ph.D, University of Edinburgh), Professor of Philosophy at Reformed Theological Seminary "The fact that apologetics depends on theology has been underestimated, historically, and cannot be overemphasized. Jamin Hubner gets it right; and in this volume reade...
