Is Aquinas's Sententia libri Ethicorum an interpretation of Aristotle based on `principles of Christian ethics'? Or do we have in that work a presentation of the foundation of Aquinas's moral philosophy? Professor Doig answers these questions through an examination of the historical context within which the Sententia was composed. In Chapters 1-2, the work's role as a corrective of earlier commentaries is established. Chapter 3, by examining philosophy at Paris between 1215 and 1283, reveals that the proposal by Aquinas of a moral philosophy would have been unexceptional. Chapter 4's investigation of the principles underlying the moral theory of the Sententia makes apparent that they were regarded by Aquinas as both philosophical and Aristotelian. The date to be assigned the composition of the Sententia is studied in Chapter 5, and the conclusion is drawn, that with some probability, the Sententia is its author's final proposal of moral doctrines. The closing Chapter offers a summary of that moral philosophy against the historical background brought out earlier.

The author proposes a new way of teaching Reformed Theology, in particular the teaching of systematic theology. He proposes a viable integration between theology and life, between its content and its context, and this the author calls "Theology as Wisdom." The book proposes itself as a challenge for the need to correct the current curricula in theological education and, at the same time, as a key toward the construction of new educational projects. The book initiates its quest from the theological locus of defining theology as a reflection that occurs within the faith community -a reflection about the original and present character of this faith in relation to the general community of human ...

This sweeping book explores the profound shift in the way European kings and queens were regarded by their subjects between the Reformation and the Enlightenment. Once viewed as godlike beings, by 1715 monarchs had come to represent the human, visible side of the rational state. The author offers new insights into the relations between kings and their subjects and the interplay between monarchy and religion.
"Among the many hidden gems in Bluegrass history is the state's long relationship with hemp, a history noted by a historical "Hemp Highway" destination. ... New organizations like Homestead Alternatives and Zelios, Inc. have taken that history into the modern world. Author Dan Isenstein details the history of the crop and the historic trail dedicated to it."--Back cover.
On America's western frontier, myths of prosperity concealed the brutal conditions endured by women, slaves, orphans, and the poor. As poverty and unrest took root in eighteenth-century Kentucky, western lawmakers championed ideas about whiteness, manhood, and patriarchal authority to help stabilize a politically fractious frontier. Honor Sachs combines rigorous scholarship with an engaging narrative to examine how conditions in Kentucky facilitated the expansion of rights for white men in ways that would become a model for citizenship in the country as a whole. Endorsed by many prominent western historians, this groundbreaking work is a major contribution to frontier scholarship.
