Das Buch beleuchtet die gesellschaftlich begründete „Natur“ des Mannes. Die Beiträge zeigen, wie Männlichkeit als soziale Konstruktion nach Teilgruppen unterschiedlich sein und sich über die Zeit wandeln kann. Das wird an den Veränderungen „erwachsener“ Männlichkeiten in Beruf und Familie verdeutlicht. Außerdem wird untersucht, wie Männlichkeit in Subgruppen evtl. auch über „abweichende“ Praktiken bewältigt werden kann. Gegenstand dieses Bandes ist der Mann, der in der bisherigen soziologischen Forschung eher selten Thema war. Gerade weil von naturwissenschaftlicher Seite versucht wird, die Frage von nature und nurture zugunsten der ersteren zu beantworten, ist die Soziologie verstärkt aufgerufen zu zeigen, inwieweit die „Natur“ des Mannes „Natur durch Gesellschaft“ ist.
