"Cooper Basin is an upper Carboniferous-Middle Triassic intracratonic basin in northeastern South Australia and southwestern Queensland. The basin is Australia's premier onshore hydrocarbon producing province and also hosts a range of unconventional gas play types within the Permian Gidgealpa Group, including basin-centred gas and tight gas accumulations, deep dry coal gas associated with the Patchawarra and Toolachee formations, the Murteree and Roseneath shale gas plays and deep coal seam gas in the Weena Trough (e.g. Goldstein et al., 2012). The principal source rocks for these plays are the Permian coals and coaly shales of the Gidgealpa Group (Boreham & Hill, 1998; Deighton et al., 2003; Carr et al., 2016). Mapping the petroleum generation potential of these source rocks, together with describing the resulting fluid composition, is critical for understanding the hydrocarbon prospectivity of the basin. This study applies petroleum systems analysis to investigate the maturity and generation potential of the Cooper Basin source rocks and is underpinned by a public domain, pseudo-3D petroleum systems model (Hall & Palu, 2016)."--Online abstract.

"Twenty-seven whole rock samples and eleven extracted samples or kerogen concentrates from five potential Permian sources within the Cooper Basin, Australia were provided for petroleum generation characterisation (eleven samples) and PhaseKinetic characterisation (six samples) following the approach of di Primio and Horsfield (2006). Organofacies Type definition was performed for twentyseven samples and characterisation of free hydrocarbons for 15 samples. The evolution of late gas potentials as a function of organofacies and maturity were determined for fifteen samples following the approach of Mahlstedt (2012), as well as kinetic parameters of primary and secondary gas formation (one sample) using a modified GORFit - model (Mahlstedt et al., 2013). Thermal maturity of Patchawarra Fm. samples is broad (0.5 ¿ 5.5% VR) offering an insight into differences of gas potential."--Online abstract.

The main aim of this study is to use petroleum systems analysis to improve the understanding of the petroleum systems present on the Lawn Hill Platform of the Isa Superbasin. Part A of this report series reported the results of burial and thermal modelling of two wells (Desert Creek 1 and Egilabria 1). Results from the 1-D modelling help other aspects of interest such as the hydrocarbon generation potential and distribution of hydrocarbons by source rock which this publication presents. Modelling uncertainties are reported and described, highlighting knowledge gaps and areas for further work.--Online abstract.

"The South Nicholson region has the potential to host major petroleum and base metal mineral resources. The region is poorly understood compared with the neighbouring resource-rich areas of the McArthur Basin and the Mount Isa Province. A multidisciplinary study was undertaken as part of the Exploring for the Future program to improve our understanding of the petroleum potential of the region. Our work integrates newly acquired seismic data, geological mapping and geochronology, organic and inorganic geochemistry, petroleum systems modelling, and a shale gas assessment to build a better understanding of the region's resource potential. The South Nicholson seismic survey imaged a new sub-basin, the Carrara Sub-basin--an approximately 1550 km2 depocentre that likely includes Meso- and Paleoproterozoic sedimentary rock. Successions within the Carrara Sub-basin are likely to be highly prospective for energy resources, significantly increasing the extent of the regional prospectivity fairway. New datasets and interpretation from this study have greatly improved understanding of the South Nicholson region, de-risking the region for future resource exploration." -- Online abstract.

"Australia's longest onshore seismic line (18GA-KB1) across the southern Canning Basin informs resource evaluation of the frontier Kidson Sub-basin and Waukarlycarly Embayment. The Kidson Sub-basin covers 91 000 km2 and has a sag basin architecture. Preliminary interpretation of the seismic data indicates that the sedimentary basin is approximately 6 km deep, and includes a conformable package of Ordovician-Devonian siliciclastic, carbonate and evaporite facies of exploration interest. Located in the western end of the seismic line, the newly drilled deep stratigraphic well Waukarlycarly 1 penetrated 2680.53 m from the rotary table of Cenozoic and Paleozoic strata in the Waukarlycarly Embayment. This abstract reviews the Larapintine petroleum systems and discusses their possible extension into this frontier region...." -- Online abstract.

"The onshore Canning Basin in Western Australia is the focus of a regional hydrocarbon prospectivity assessment being undertaken by the Exploring for the Future (EFTF) program; an Australian Government initiative dedicated to increasing investment in resource exploration in northern Australia. The four-year program led by Geoscience Australia focusses on the acquisition of new data and information about the potential mineral, energy and groundwater resources concealed beneath the surface in northern Australia and parts of South Australia. As part of this program, significant work has been carried out to deliver new pre-competitive data including new seismic acquisition, drilling of a stratig...
