This volume examines two major controversies that captured the theological attention of Andrew Fuller. In the wake of the Enlightenment, traditional Christian doctrine was challenged by various rationalistic and philosophical alternatives. A notable example is the thought of William Vidler, a former Baptist pastor who initially embraced Universalism and later Unitarianism. Vidler’s shift was influential enough that Fuller felt compelled to respond through a series of letters, later published in 1802. This critical edition, along with its introduction, provides an overview of Vidler’s theological position and Fuller’s rebuttal. This edition also includes Fuller’s debate with fellow Particular Baptist Abraham Booth, whom Fuller deeply respected. The conversation that developed between them contains some of Fuller’s most mature theological reflections on the doctrines of imputation, substitution, and particular redemption that impacted the transatlantic Baptist and evangelical world of the nineteenth century and have had ongoing reverberations up to the present day.
All Who Love Our Blessed Redeemer
Throughout his life, John Ryland Jr. (1753–1825) served the Particular Baptists in England as a pastor, academy president, and missions advocate, becoming one of the most prominent voices in his denomination. A committed Calvinist and Baptist, Ryland nevertheless became known in his day for his openness toward those who did not hold to his theological convictions. From his correspondence with Anglicans, Congregationalists, Presbyterians, and even the Russian emperor, to his cooperation with Arminians and Methodists, Ryland showed his willingness to enter into relationships and partnerships with a broad spectrum of Christians. This work examines that aspect of Ryland’s life and thought, seeking to understand the denominational context, theological foundations, and personal influences that led him to adopt such a broad-minded view.

Andrew Fuller (1754–1815) was a pastor whose ministry coincided with the revitalization of the English Calvinistic Baptist denomination of which he was a distinguished member. He was a pathbreaking theologian, apologist, and spiritual biographer, who throughout his career remained rooted in the local church. Der Band präsentiert fünf im Forschungsstand aktualisierte Beiträge einer Tagung der Historischen Kommission zur Erforschung des Pietismus zu Gottfried Arnold, die 2017 in dessen Geburtsort Annaberg stattgefunden hatte. Initiiert und geleitet wurde die Tagung von Hans Schneider. Die hier abgedruckten Aufsätze sollen auch an ihn erinnern. Hinzu kommen Beiträge zu Gottfried Arnolds Perleberger Sündfluth-Predigt von Patrick Bahl und zur Wiederkehr des allgemeinen Priestertums im 17.
