This book features not only the latest trends but also academic and industry practitioner stakeholders’ perspectives on language and functional role issues facing the rapidly developing corporate communication (CC) profession in the Greater China region. The book also explores the implications for Western societies that cross-culturally engage with Chinese partners in CC practices. The book’s chapters are oriented on five main themes, namely: Development of the CC Profession, Bilingual Practices in Corporate Communication, Corporate Social Responsibility, Employee Communications, and Media Discourse & Persuasive Communication. The first two cluster themes feature a review of the PR/CC profession’s evolutionary path to its current status as a more distinct and diversified CC profession emphasizing the role of language and particularly the bilingualism phenomenon, whereas the other cluster themes, which adopt the perspectives of academics and those of CC practitioners, span from cross-cultural, profession-wide and bilingual communication issues to applications of heuristic knowledge within industry-specific workplace contexts.
This edited volume explores mentorship in knowledge production and dissemination and examines its implications for academic lives and careers of novice scholarly writers. By bringing together experts in a variety of areas in applied linguistics, the book addresses the complex topic of mentorship in scholarly publication practices of junior scholars. Drawing on the perspectives and experiences of novice scholars, supervisors, practitioners, and researchers, it intends to demystify the socialization process of junior academics and help paint a richer and more nuanced picture of the practices, experiences, and challenges of mentorship in writing for publication. Kunqu, recognized by UNESCO in 2001 as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, is among the oldest and most refined traditions of the family of genres known as xiqu (music-drama or “Chinese opera”). Today, the art form’s musical and performance traditions are being passed on by senior artists. This book consists of twelve explanatory narrations in English, selected and translated from among an expansive collective endeavour in Chinese. Each performer narration sheds light on the human processes that create and transmit celebrated pieces of theatre. Annotations place these narratives in historical, literary, discursive, and aesthetic contexts. Close critical attention reveals kunqu as a living and changing art form. Methodologically, this work breaks new ground by centering the performers’ perspective rather than the text, providing a complement and a challenge to performance analysis, and ideological, sociological, or plot-based perspectives on xiqu.
Having, maintaining, and/or obtaining good health is one of the most frequently mentioned desires that people have. Although genetic and environmental factors play an important role in these lifestyles and diseases, it is also known that health-related information that people are exposed to through a variety of modalities and sources has a huge impact on people’s health, health behaviours, and their acceptance of health-related policies, as recently demonstrated by the Covid-19 pandemic. The handbook of Health, Media, and Communication presents a timely and up-to-date overview of the broad and substantial research efforts that have been invested in recent decades to understand how health communication affects health knowledge, perceptions, and discussion as well as health behaviours and, ultimately, health outcomes. The handbook is structured to reflect and address essential parts of the communication process: sender, content, medium, and recipient. In addition to providing a historical and contemporary overview, the handbook also acknowledges the novel challenges that emergent media present for health communication, such as infodemics and misinformation.
The volume explores how comparative thematics can be approached via translational issues to show how Western and Eastern literatures and traditions may be defined, in terms of imagery and contrastive botanical lexicography, from English and into English. Examples take into account several Western languages (French, Spanish, Italian), ancient languages (Greek, Latin, Hebrew) and Creoles. The choice of a common theme highlights how theological ascendancy through the rose mystique from the Bible may be juxtaposed to the harmony principle of the ‘queen peony’ in poems. In terms of thematics, the biblical ‘rose’ was a translational ‘fraud’ and did not exist as such in the Aramaic Song of Songs. In terms of context, Sino-English translators were of Jewish descent and translated during the years of Nazism. Leading Sinologists suffered purges and accusations in UK and US, Chinese translators were conversely expatriates or diasporic members of the community.
This volume covers aspects of opera translation within the Western world and in Asia, as well as some of opera’s many travels between continents, countries, languages and cultures—and also between genres and media. The concept of ‘adaptation’ is a thread running through the sixteen contributions, which encompass a variety of composers, operas, periods and national traditions. Sung translation, libretto translation, surtitling, subtitling are discussed from a range of theoretical and methodological perspectives. Exploration of aspects such as the relationship between language and music, multimodality, intertextuality, cultural and linguistic transfer, multilingualism, humour, identity and stereotype, political ideology, the translator’s voice and the role of the audience is driven by a shared motivation: a love of opera and of the beauty it has never ceased to provide through the centuries, and admiration for the people who write, compose, perform, direct, translate, or otherwise contribute to making the joy of opera a part of our lives.
