Multidisciplinary Aspects of Design

This open access book gathers the contributions from the Design! OPEN International Conference, held in Parma, Italy in May 2022. The conference explored the multidisciplinary aspects of design starting from its dimensions: objects (design as focused on the object, on its functional and symbolic dimension, and at the same time on the object as a tool for representing cultures), processes (the designer’s self-reflective moment which is focused on the analysis and on the definition of processes in various contexts, spanning innovation, social engagement, reflection on emergencies or forecasting), experiences (design as a theoretical and practical strategy aimed at facilitating experiential interactions among people, people and objects or environments), and narratives (making history, representing through different media, archiving, narrating, and exhibiting design). The contributions, which were selected by means of a rigorous international peer-review process, highlight numerous exciting ideas that will spur novel research directions and foster multidisciplinary collaboration among different specialists.

PAD #13

  • Categories: Art

The issue, edited by Marina Parente and Carla Sedini, founder of D4T - Design for Territories Research Network of Politecnico di Milano, aims to contribute to this new field of study helping readers understand the design-led phenomenon, which involves the tangible resources of a territory (like monumental and landscape heritage) as well as the intangible ones (like cultural identity and people values). The main topic of this issue is: How could the design develop the local dimension enhancing and revitalizing the territory at the same time? Furthermore, with issue #13 we are opening a series with artists’ images that will match the articles with a visual research connected to the proposed ...

Design for Emergency Management

Design for Emergency Management

Through a combination of theory, practice, and a range of interdisciplinary case studies, this book expands how we define and think about the critical role and relationship between design and emergencies. This role extends far beyond aesthetics: the book highlights the urgency of ensuring that a wide range of stakeholders and a diverse representation of the public comes together to work towards preventing disasters. Design in the context of disasters, such as earthquakes, hurricanes, flooding and (wild) fires, provides new ways of looking at challenges. It contributes methods to actively engage communities in managing and minimizing disaster risk. Contributors present the latest research on ...

Introducing Architectural Tectonics

Introducing Architectural Tectonics is an exploration of the poetics of construction. Tectonic theory is an integrative philosophy examining the relationships formed between design, construction, and space while creating or experiencing a work of architecture. In this text, author Chad Schwartz presents an introductory investigation into tectonic theory, subdividing it into distinct concepts in order to make it accessible to beginning and advanced students alike. The book centers on the tectonic analysis of twenty contemporary works of architecture located in eleven countries including Germany, Italy, United States, Chile, Japan, Bangladesh, Spain, and Australia and designed by such notable ...

Designing Futuring beyond the emergency scenario

Designing Futuring beyond the emergency scenario

The book picks up a series of contributions born from an online column edited by the Design Laboratory for Sustainability of Dipartimento DIDA (UNIFI) during the period of the pandemic (March 2020, COVID-19): Marco Petroni, Formafantasma, Lorenzo Giorgi, Duccio Maria Gambi and Federica Fragapane. Designing Futuring – beyond the emergency scenario reflects on the heavy contemporary global upheavals through a collection of ideas, actions and case studies of particular interest, representing the different souls and fields of action of the discipline. Designers, researchers, historians, thinkers and activists called to share their thoughts have been involved in building a cartography of alternative landscapes and visions to recognize complexity by learning to navigate it, for a more sustainable future.

A Semi-Aggregate Model for Social Expenditure Projections

This report describes the semi-aggregate model (SAM) developed to deliver aggregate projections of social protection expenditures as well as semi-aggregate projections of income sources by age class and gender for a number of European countries (Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Latvia, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Poland, Spain and United Kingdom) over the horizon 2005-2050. The partial equilibrium stance adopted allows both a greater flexibility in the choice of countries and in the building of scenarios, while at the same time offering an easier understanding of the model's inner mechanisms with respect to general equilibrium modelling. Results for aggregate projections are presented, including various sensitivity scenarios devoted at analysing the role of theoretical replacement rates and employment rates--such as the one necessary to fulfil the Lisbon targets--on public pensions expenditures.

Complex Non-Kähler Geometry

Complex Non-Kähler Geometry

Collecting together the lecture notes of the CIME Summer School held in Cetraro in July 2018, the aim of the book is to introduce a vast range of techniques which are useful in the investigation of complex manifolds. The school consisted of four courses, focusing on both the construction of non-Kähler manifolds and the understanding of a possible classification of complex non-Kähler manifolds. In particular, the courses by Alberto Verjovsky and Andrei Teleman introduced tools in the theory of foliations and analytic techniques for the classification of compact complex surfaces and compact Kähler manifolds, respectively. The courses by Sebastien Picard and Sławomir Dinew focused on analytic techniques in Hermitian geometry, more precisely, on special Hermitian metrics and geometric flows, and on pluripotential theory in complex non-Kähler geometry.

Liquid Crystal Display Drivers

Liquid Crystal Display Drivers deals with Liquid Crystal Displays from the electronic engineering point of view and is the first expressively focused on their driving circuits. After introducing the physical-chemical properties of the LC substances, their evolution and application to LCDs, the book converges to the examination and in-depth explanation of those reliable techniques, architectures, and design solutions amenable to efficiently design drivers for passive-matrix and active-matrix LCDs, both for small size and large size panels. Practical approaches regularly adopted for mass production but also emerging ones are discussed. The topics treated have in many cases general validity and found application also in alternative display technologies (OLEDs, Electrophoretic Displays, etc.).

Lighting the city--illuminating densely populated architecture and public space--is complex, difficult, necessary work. "Lights in the Blue" chronicles a fleeting exploration of possibilities, when four public, historical sites in the heart of Milan were "occupied" by well-known lighting designers exploring new ways of looking at everyday urban life. These squares, streets and gardens lived under a different light for four days, an experiment documented here by a host of contemporary photographers.
