Location Awareness in the Age of Google Maps explores the mundane act of navigating cities in the age of digital mapping infrastructures. Noone follows the frictions routing through Google Maps’ categorising and classifying of spatial information. Complicating the assumption that digital maps distort a sense of direction, Noone argues that Google Maps’ location awareness does more than just organise and orient a representation of space—it also organises and orients imaginaries of publicness, selfsufficiency, legibility, and error. At the same time, Location Awareness in the Age of Google Maps helps to animate the ordinary ways people are challenging and refusing Google Maps’ vision o...

In the past two decades economic bubbles inflated and architectural spending around the globe reached fever pitch. In both well-established centers of capital accumulation and far--flung locales, audacious building projects sprang up, while the skyscraper, heretofore more commonly associated with American capitalism, seemed as if it might pack up and relocate to Dubai and Shanghai. Of course, much has changed in the past couple of years. In formerly free-spending Dubai, the tallest building in the world is now is named after the president of Abu Dhabi after he stepped in with last--minute debt financing. This book aims to provide orthopedic surgeons with all the information that they will require in order to set up and run a motor skills course that will meet the needs of junior staff in Orthopedic Sports Medicine and help in training better surgeons for the future. The coverage is wide-ranging, from the fundamentals of what it takes to be a sports surgeon through to validation methods that measure teaching effectiveness and the certification of surgical skills at the end of the course. Clear guidance is provided on how to teach concepts of surgical skill and the strategy and practical details of designing a training program, with inclusion of a helpful checklist of do’s and don’ts. Different basic training modalities are described, with a particular focus on the FAST system adopted by the Arthroscopy Association of North America, and the role of simulators in surgical skills training is discussed. The book has been produced in cooperation with ISAKOS and the authors are leading professionals from around the world who offer a truly global and multidisciplinary perspective on the subject.
This book explores the numerous recent advances in arthroscopic and endoscopic surgery of the smaller joints of the upper extremity – elbow, wrist, and hand. Providing readers with all necessary information, i.e. relevant surgical anatomy and a clear description of technical steps, it uniquely and comprehensively presents arthroscopic and endoscopic techniques of small joints in one publication. The procedures are subdivided according to the pathology (instability, fractures, etc.) or grouped by the region within the anatomical area and include the relevant anatomy, extensive cadaveric dissections, devices and instrumentation, surgical procedures, pearls and pitfalls. High-quality colour illustrations further simplify and complement the description of surgical techniques. Written by pioneers of these techniques, the book is designed to be an up-to-date reference resource for both new and advanced orthopaedic surgeons wanting to become familiar with these techniques.
This book is a compilation of the remarkable journeys of 48 hand surgery pioneers from the Asian-Pacific region. They came from diverse backgrounds — one being the 21st generation doctor in the family to another being the first ever orthopaedic surgeon of a major university. While some pioneers delved deep in the lab to push the boundaries of surgical care, others strived to make high quality hand surgery available to the masses. However, what united them all was an unwavering commitment to their patients' well-being and a willingness to go above and beyond to attain their objectives. The International Federation of Societies for Surgery of the Hand (IFSSH) celebrates the spirit of enthusia...
