"Historical Matters Concerning Xinjiang" is a white paper published by the China State Council Information Office. The Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region is situated in northwest China and in the hinterland of the Eurasian Continent. It borders eight countries: Mongolia, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India. It was a place where the famed Silk Road connected ancient China with the rest of the world and where diverse cultures gathered. The Chinese government issues the paper to counter claims made that the Xinjiang region is not part of China and resist what it terms as an, "attempt to separate ethnic groups in Xinjiang from the Chinese nation and ethnic cultures in the region from the diverse but integrated Chinese culture."

In August 1993, the Taiwan Affairs Office and Information Office of the State Council of the People's Republic of China published a document called 'The Taiwan Question and the Reunification of China.' This 24-page pamphlet, or booklet, subsequently became known as Beijing's 'White Paper' on Taiwan. Strongly advocating Taiwan's reunification with mainland China, the paper appeared to reflect the People's Republic of China's opposition to the Republic of China making a bid to participate in the United Nations or other international governmental organizations. In this volume, John Copper offers his analysis and critique of Beijing's 'White Paper.' Included in the appendices are the text of the original white paper, Taiwan's response to the document and Taiwan's guidelines for national unification.

Civil Liberties in China

This book examines civil liberties in China today, covering the topics of constitutional rights of citizens, rights of the criminally accused, the court and legal systems, and judicial conflicts between government regulation and personal freedoms. The Constitution of the People's Republic of China was amended in 2004 to expressly include the protection of human rights, and the last revision of the Constitution in 1982 ostensibly guaranteed civil liberties such as freedom of speech, of the press, and of assembly. In actuality, China still resorts to suppressive actions such as strictly controlling accessible content on the Internet and censorship of the media, as well as silencing criticism of government or calls for political reform. Civil Liberties in China explores both theory and practice by identifying key issues in Chinese ideology, government, and human rights. The book assesses historical evidence and empirical data, putting major legal cases in the context of Chinese traditions and culture. Abortion, the one-child policy, and privacy issues are given special attention.
