Unmasked

Victoria, Australia's most populated state, has suffered unprecedented governance of seemingly relentless, drastic, and stringent laws which has put at risk viability and survival of the state and its people. Under these laws, the leader of Victoria, Premier Daniel Andrews has taken Victoria's capital Melbourne, from being the World's most liveable city to the World's most locked down city. This book unmasks the man, his government, his policies, and what has transpired in the state of Victoria since he was in positions of power.

The Locked-up Country

Donald Horne famously called Australia &‘ the lucky country' . So how did we become the locked-up country and how might the future look different? Australia has changed enormously since Horne' s 1960s, but its response to the COVID-19 pandemic demonstrates the enduring truth of his thesis that our &‘ luck' was undeserved and wouldn' t last. By closing its borders and imposing a nationally coordinated lockdown, Australia unexpectedly eliminated COVID-19 in 2020, achieving one of the world' s lowest excess mortality rates. But as governments proceeded to bungle key planks of the pandemic response, by mid-2021, Australia was &‘ locked up' &– closed off to the world and fragmented along state and territory borders, with its major cities enduring repeated and extended lockdowns. It soon became clear that Australia' s regulatory state had let us down. But these failures were not inevitable, and we can manage future crises more successfully. In The Locked-up Country, political experts Tom Chodor and Shahar Hameiri identify the source of Australia' s recent challenges and suggest a better way forward.

Northern Star

It seems Peter Kuiksak's star just keeps rising. The young hockey hero from the Northwest Territories is the top player in his league, being pursued by agents, and becoming something of a celebrity in his adopted city, Edmonton. But being the centre of attention isn't all it's cracked up to be. It seems no one sees Peter as just Peter anymore — least of all the star himself. Inspired by the career of NHL star Jordin Tootoo, is about one exceptional player's journey toward hockey greatness.

44 Years on the Frontline of Medicine

The tales here are rendered with great detail, covering years when the medical community saw many changes in treatment and tools. Some of the stories are grim, occasionally ending in death, sometimes due to a medical error. But there are plenty of light moments, too, and Andrews manages a candid, matter-of-fact tone that aptly fits each tale; he is sympathetic without being sentimental, humorous without being silly. He also does a fine job of revealing the behind-the scenes personalities and practices in a medical facility, while offering a perspective that patients dont often experience. Andrews does a solid job of weaving the narrative thread in an engaging voice that invites the reader to curl up for a good read. In short, 44 Years on the Front Line of Medicine is likely to please a wide audience. -BlueInk Review

A New Spirit of Capitalism

A New Spirit of Capitalism

Capitalism represents the greatest engine of material well-being that the world has ever seen. But scepticism about its viability has grown across the political spectrum, on the back of rising inequalities, climate change and digital disruptions. This book joins the debate about the crisis of capitalism—not by blindly defending the system, but by advocating concrete proposals to put it on a more socially and environmentally sustainable path. Too often, conversations about the future of capitalism consider it as a homogeneous socio-economic system whose features vary little from one location to another; this commonly leads to one-size-fits-all recommendations to address capitalism’s flaws. The contributors to this book, by contrast, look at the transition needed from the perspective of capitalism’s multi-faceted nature, in response to challenges including the green transition, the digital revolution and spiralling inequalities. These present difficult trade-offs in terms of growth, efficiency and stability, which each capitalist model will solve differently.
