This collection explores critical and visual practices through the lens of interactions and intersections between pattern and chaos. The dynamic of the inter-relationship between pattern and chaos is such as to challenge disciplinary boundaries, critical frameworks and modes of understanding, perception and communication, often referencing the in-between territory of art and science through experimentation and visual scrutiny. This publication is the result of an artists' research residency that used unseen parts of the Lace Archive in Nottingham as catalysts for the creation of new artworks.Andrew Bracey, Danica Maier and Lucy Renton spent two and half years rummaging, exploring and making.Critical texts by Pennina Barnett, Fiona Curran, Janis Jefferies, Sian Vaughan, alongside interviews with the artists involved, unpack the findings.This is part of a larger research project 'Bummock: New Artistic Responses to Unseen parts of the Archive'. Like the Bummock - the largest part of the iceberg that remains hidden under water - archives often contain far more than is ever accessed. The human body lies at the centre of our relationship to fashion and textiles. Crafting Anatomies explores how the body has become a catalyst for archival research, creative dialogues and hybrid fabrications in fashion design. Focusing on how our response to the corporeal has shifted over time, the book looks at how it is currently influencing design and socio-material practices. With contributions from a multidisciplinary range of scholars and researchers, Crafting Anatomies examines how new technologies have become integrated with traditional fashion and textiles techniques, bringing together art, science and biomedical approaches. Traversing the cutting-edge of design research, the chapters take us from the forgotten lives of historical garments to the potential of biofabrication to cross the boundaries between skin and textile. Illustrated with 120 images visualising original research, the book reveals how the human body continues to inspire future design, from historical wearables to prosthetic limbs and 3D-printed footwear. In doing so, it provides an inspiring account of how fashion and textile culture now impacts socio-creativity and the formation of contemporary identity.
Exhibiting Craft and Design: Transgressing the White Cube Paradigm investigates the firmly-established manner in which craft and design have typically been presented by museums and galleries, what strategies curators have employed throughout the twentieth century, and especially in more recent years how exhibiting design and craft objects challenges the notion of the modernist White Cube display paradigm.
In an era of increasingly available digital resources, many textile designers and makers find themselves at an interesting juncture between traditional craft processes and newer digital technologies. Highly specialized craft/design practitioners may now elect to make use of digital processes in their work, but often choose not to abandon craft skills fundamental to their practice, and aim to balance the complex connection between craft and digital processes. The essays collected here consider this transition from the viewpoint of aesthetic opportunity arising in the textile designer's hands-on experimentation with material and digital technologies available in the present. Craft provides the foundations for thinking within the design and production of textiles, and as such may provide some clues in the transition to creative and thoughtful use of current and future digital technologies. Within the framework of current challenges relating to sustainable development, globalization, and economic constraints it is important to interrogate and question how we might go about using established and emerging technologies in textiles in a positive manner.
