This volume engages with notions of lateness and modernity in medieval architecture, broadly conceived geographically, temporally, methodologically, and theoretically. It aims to (re)situate secular and religious buildings from the 14th through the 16th centuries that are indebted to medieval building practices and designs, within the more established narratives of art and architectural history.
Making Modern Spain
In this elegantly written study, Alfante explores the work of select nineteenth-century writers, intellectuals, journalists, politicians, and clergy who responded to cultural and spiritual shifts caused by the movement toward secularization in Spain. Focusing on the social experience, this book probes the tensions between traditionalism and liberalism that influenced public opinion of the clergy, sacred buildings, and religious orders. The writings of Cecilia Böhl de Faber (Fernán Caballero), Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer, Benito Pérez Galdós, and José María de Pereda addressed conflicts between modernizing forces and the Catholic Church about the place of religion and its signifiers in Spanish society. Foregrounding expropriation (government confiscation of civil and ecclesiastical property) and exclaustration (the expulsion of religious communities), and drawing on archival research, the history of disentailment, cultural theory, memory studies, and sociology, Alfante demonstrates how Spain’s liberalizing movement profoundly influenced class mobility and faith among the populace.
The Power of Cities
The Power of Cities focuses on Iberian cities during the lengthy transition from the late Roman to the early modern period, with a particular interest in the change from early Christianity to the Islamic period, and on to the restoration of Christianity. Drawing on case studies from cities such as Toledo, Cordoba, and Seville, it collects for the first time recent research in urban studies using both archaeological and historical sources. Against the common portrayal of these cities characterized by discontinuities due to decadence, decline and invasions, it is instead continuity – that is, a gradual transformation – which emerges as the defining characteristic. The volume argues for a fresh interpretation of Iberian cities across this period, seen as a continuum of structural changes across time, and proposes a new history of the Iberian Peninsula, written from the perspective of the cities. El manifiesto del girasol. Una obra maestra de Gaudí: El Capricho de Comillas
El manifiesto del girasol es un profundo trabajo de investigación sobre una de las obras de Gaudí menos estudiadas: El Capricho de Comillas. Levantada entre 1883 y 1885, esta casa encargada por el abogado cántabro Máximo Díaz de Quijano, tiene la importancia de ser el primer edificio construido según diseño del genial arquitecto catalán y, sin embargo, es una gran desconocida. El trabajo de Sama se ha fijado dos objetivos fundamentales: por un lado, la búsqueda de fuentes de información que aporten conocimiento sobre el proyecto original (ya que los planos se han perdido); por otro, la puesta en contexto de El Capricho, es decir, el estudio del edificio en relación con la teoría y la práctica arquitectónica de su época. Las conclusiones de este trabajo demuestran que, pese a su aparente extravagancia, la obra de Comillas es un verdadero manifiesto arquitectónico en busca de la modernidad.
