Die Geschichte des Sozialpsychiatrischen Dienstes in Zürich von 1969 bis 1995 dokumentiert die Entwicklung des Reformprojekts der Zürcher Psychiatrie unter der Leitung von Ambros Uchtenhagen. Es umfasst Hintergründe, Zielsetzungen und deren vielfältige Umsetzung aus zeitgenössischer Sicht. Was damals die Versorgung psychisch Kranker grundlegend veränderte, entsprach einem weit verbreiteten Bedürfnis und erhielt uneingeschränkte Unterstützung durch politische Behörden und Öffentlichkeit. Zu drei Schwerpunkten wurden Versorgungsmodelle geschaffen, die den vernachlässigten besonderen Bedürfnissen der Kranken und ihres Umfeldes entsprechen: Menschen mit chronischer Psychose, Menschen mit Suchtmittelproblemen und Menschen mit psychischen Problemen im Alter. In dieser Zeit etablierte sich die Sozialpsychiatrie als eigenständige diagnostische und therapeutische Richtung innerhalb der Psychiatrie, in Ergänzung zu den gleichzeitig sich entwickelnden pharmakologischen und psychotherapeutischen Richtungen.
