Hey, Welcome to my book. The Mindset Mission shares my journey from deep depression to my happy, bouncy, optimistic self today. I wanted to share my authentic ups and downs with you so you could relate to my story and know that, no matter what you are going through, you are not alone. I once lost who I was and, even worse, I lost the vision of who I wanted to be. When I hit rock bottom, my self-development journey was ignited because I knew I had to change and by making the decision to change I knew my circumstances would also transform. This book is a collection of tools and techniques that will help keep your mind positive, your body moving and your spirit ignited. This book is also my story and personal look inside my life and mind. Overall, I want this book to teach you that you have the potential to achieve anything you want. It's all about your mindset. Welcome to your mindset mission. Love, DS x

Lost Causes

What should be done with minors who kill, maim, defile, and destroy the lives of others? The state of Texas deals with some of its most serious and violent youthful offenders through “determinate sentencing,” a unique sentencing structure that blends parts of the juvenile and adult justice systems. Once adjudicated via determinate sentencing, offenders are first incarcerated in the Texas Youth Commission (TYC). As they approach age eighteen, they are either transferred to the Texas prison system to serve the remainder of their original determinate sentence or released from TYC into Texas’s communities. The first long-term study of determinate sentencing in Texas, Lost Causes examines t...

The Natural History of Crime

'I love puzzles, and finding answers is the only truly enjoyable part of what I do.' Professor Patricia Wiltshire is a forensic ecologist, her days spent at crime scenes collecting samples, standing over dead bodies in a mortuary, or looking down her microscope for evidence. Working at the interface of where the criminal and natural world interact, Patricia has been involved in some of the most high-profile murder cases. Now, through a study of her most infamous, and fascinating cases - including the murder of Sarah Payne, and the Soham murders of Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman - Patricia will show us how she finds the answers to some of the worst crimes imaginable. Not only does she help the police solve crimes and give answers to the most bemusing circumstances, she can help to exonerate the innocent and enable confessions from the guilty. In The Natural History of Crime we join Patricia in putting the puzzle together, teasing the evidence out of her cases and showing us all how life and death have always been, and always will be, intertwined. Nature has given us a messy, imperfect world, but her job is to help make sense of it when we need it to most.

Hide and Seek

“Aren’t wedding coordinators supposed to prevent that sort of thing?” suggested Carol This is the question that greeted wedding coordinator Belle Saint James when she was waylaid by a group of women at the conclusion of a talk about her business at the Ladies Auxiliary. Belle has been haunted by what happened at Janelle and Scott’s wedding. Between the wedding ceremony and the reception, the bridegroom disappeared. He was there one minute, and gone the next! She was as surprised as everyone else. Was there anything she could have done to prevent it? Had she done the right thing when she involved her lover; Vietnam veteran, ex-policeman, and now Private Investigator, Marcel Smith, in locating the missing bridegroom? Just how encompassing are the responsibilities of a wedding coordinator anyhow?

Final Words

In 1976 the Supreme Court of the United States affirmed the legality of capital punishment in their ruling on Gregg v. Georgia. In the forty-six years since the decision was handed down, 1,551 convicted prisoners have been executed. The United States is the only Western nation—and one of four advanced democracies—that regularly applies the death penalty. While the death penalty is legal in twenty-seven states, only twenty-one have the means to carry out death sentences. Of those states, Texas has executed the most prisoners in recent history, putting 578 people to death since the 1976 ruling, beginning with Charlie Brooks in 1982. Texas retains the third-largest death row population, beh...
