In ten original studies, former students and colleagues of Maurice Careless, one of Canada's most distinguished historians, explore both traditional and hitherto neglected topics in the development of nineteenth-century Ontario. Their papers incorporate the three themes that characterize their mentor's scholarly efforts: metropolitan-hinterland relations; urban development; and the impact of 'limited identities' -- gender, class, ethnicity and regionalism -- that shaped the lives of Old Ontarians. Traditional topics -- colonial-imperial tension and the growth of Canadian autonomy in the Union period, the making of a 'compact' in early York, politics in pre-Rebellion Toronto, and the social v...

Roy Keane was the most controversial footballer of his generation. And the most influential. He captained Manchester United during an era in which they dominated English football. He made friends. He made enemies. He walked out of a World Cup and divided a nation. And his beloved Labrador Retriever Triggs was at his side through it all. Their walks became the stuff of 24-hour, rolling news legend. Now, in the most eagerly awaited football memoir of the decade, Triggs finally reveals the part she played in the extraordinary drama of her master's life.

Secondary Sources in the History of Canadian Medicine

Volume Two of this retrospective bibliography is both a continuation and an expansion of Volume One (1984). It contains references to Canadian medical-historical literature published between 1984 and 1998, and also includes much additional material published prior to 1984. Finally, it substantially enlarges the content of French-language material. Every effort has been made to be as inclusive as possible of articles, theses, book chapters and books, both in English and in French, relating to the history of medicine. No single electronic source can replace this bibliography. The contents are divided into three sections. The first is a listing of material expressly biographical. Section two lists material under a wide variety of subject headings related to medicine, and the third is a complete listing of the authors who have contributed these articles. Simply organized and easy to use, this bibliography will be of value to historians, archivists, librarians, and anyone interested in the history of medicine.

From the author of Dublin by Lamplight and Foley, Freefall reunites award-winning Irish playwright Michael West with The Corn Exchange: Dublin's innovative theatre company who explore the boundaries and possibilities of theatre with their trademark style of Commedia dell'Arte. Freefall is a sharp, humorous and exhilarating look at the fragility of a human life, blending impressionistic beauty, poignancy and comedy. A sudden shock, and a man's life flashes before his eyes. He experiences an intense rush of extraordinary images and tangled memories, revelations and lost connections. People time and places swirl around him. As he valiantly attempts to stitch it all back together, will his luck hold out? The play's conceit follows a man who has suffered a stroke experiencing a series of flashbacks. Trapped within his own head, the audience are taken with him through a whistlestop tour of his life: a series of vivid, often painful episodes from childhood tragedy to crumbling marriage. In a beguiling portrait of mortality and humanity, Freefall explores memory, family and loss. There are things I haven't said. Things I want to say again. I need to think. I need more time.

Notes to the University of Toronto

Two histories of the University of Toronto have been published, one in 1906 and one in 1927. Since the latter volume appeared, no comprehensive history of the University has been published. Given the size of the University and the complexity of the task, this is not entirely surprising. But, after sixty-six years, this gap in the intellectual history of Canada has been filled, and we are delighted to announce publication, in March of 2002, of Martin Friedland’s new history of one of Canada’s most important educational and cultural institutions. The author of several books on legal history, Professor Friedland brings to this task an accomplished eye and ear and a status as a long time mem...
