The Card is a short comic novel written by Arnold Bennett in 1911 (titled Denry the Audacious in the American edition). It was later made into a 1952 movie starring Alec Guinness and Petula Clark. Like much of Bennett's best work, it is set in the Potteries District of Staffordshire. It chronicles the rise of Edward Henry ("Denry") Machin from washerwoman's son to Mayor of Bursley (a fictitious town based on Burslem). This is accomplished through luck, initiative and a fair bit of chutzpah (in slang a card is a 'character', an 'original'; a clever, audacious, person). Denry Machin returned, as the slightly more mature "Edward Henry", in Bennett's sequel The Regent (1913) (titled The Old Adam in its first U.S. edition).

The Card

Edward Henry Machin first saw the smoke on the 27th May 1867, in BroughamStreet, Bursley, the most ancient of the Five Towns. Brougham Street runs downfrom St Luke's Square straight into the Shropshire Union Canal, and consists partlyof buildings known as "potbanks" (until they come to be sold by auction, whenauctioneers describe them as "extensive earthenware manufactories") and partly ofcottages whose highest rent is four-and-six a week. In such surroundings was anextraordinary man born. He was the only anxiety of a widowed mother, who gainedher livelihood and his by making up "ladies' own materials" in ladies' own houses.Mrs Machin, however, had a speciality apart from her vocation: she could washflannel with less shrinking than any other woman in the district, and she couldwash fine lace without ruining it; thus often she came to sew and remained to wash.A somewhat gloomy woman; thin, with a tongue! But I liked her. She saved a certainamount of time every day by addressing her son as Denry, instead of Edward Henry.

"The Card" chronicles the rise of Edward Henry "Denry" Machin from washerwoman's son to Mayor of Bursley. This is accomplished through luck, initiative and a fair bit of cheek or chutzpah. At age 12, Denry begins his career by altering his marks in a test sufficiently to earn him a scholarship to grammar school. At 16, he leaves school to work for Mr. Duncalf, the town clerk and a solicitor. When Duncalf organizes an exclusive ball, Denry "invites" himself and takes lessons from dance instructor Ruth Earp. On a bet, he audaciously asks the energetic, beautiful Countess of Chell to dance, and he thus earns himself the reputation of a "card" – a reputation he is determined to cement. "The Regent" is sequel to "The Card" in which Denry Machin returns, as the slightly more mature Edward Henry, a self-made success in the Midlands, who still relishes his reputation as a bit of a card. He has money, charm and ingenuity, but no taste. Despite his wealth and influence he is still in a need for an adventure so he decides to have a take on London theatrical society.

The Card

Every town should have a 'card' - someone who gets talked about, someone who does mad and wonderful things, someone who makes you laugh. Bursley in the Five Towns has a 'card': Edward Henry Machin (Denry for short). Denry begins life in a poor little house where the rent is twenty-three pence a week. But before he's thirty, he's made a lot of money, and had more adventures than you and I have had hot dinners. The town of Bursley never stops talking about him. Whatever will young Denry do next?
