Forced to deal with the fallout from his disabled brother-in-law Cassius's eviction for striking a woman with his cane, the narrator of this story provides a wry portrait of the character behind the crime. At times darkly comical and at other times tenderly poignant, "Rough Diamond" paints a portrait of the human ego at war with itself as it fluctuates between heady delusions of grandeur and painful blasts of self-contempt. Derek Haneubury is back with his first book in over a decade.

Two brothers lose and find one another again on the path to young adulthood; a woman is sought out by an unlikely medium so an insistent message can be delivered; a couple respond to an ad on Kijiji and wish they hadn't. From Vancouver Island author Derek Hanebury comes a remarkable collection of short stories that delve into humanity and what it means to navigate this sometimes uncertain world. Derek Hanebury is a Vancouver Island writer of fiction, poetry, and creative non-fiction. Something Else Altogether is his first solo collection of short stories, following the 2020 publication of Both Sides Now (RCN), which was a compilation of stories co-authored with Vicki Drybrough, and Libbie Morin, and the 2006 publication of Nocturnal Tonglen (Ekstasis) a collection of poems. His first novel, Ginger Goodwin: Beyond the Forbidden Plateau, (Arsenal Pulp) went to a second printing. He has a Master's Degree in Creative Writing from UBC and taught writing at North Island College on Vancouver Island until his retirement in 2017.

Nocturnal Tonglen

Nocturnal Tonglen is a stirring first book of poetry by Derek Hanebury, dealing with the disappearance of a young woman, his sister-in-law, Carolyn Pruyser. Angry at times, but also elegiac, the poetry confronts the darkness of suffering and, like the Buddhist practice of tonglen, exhales the white light of love and compassion.

Canadian Marxists and the Search for a Third Way

Focusing on four individuals, Canadian Marxists and the Search for a Third Way describes the lives and ideas of Ernest Winch, Bill Pritchard, Bob Russell, and Arthur Mould and examines their efforts to put their ideas into practice. Campbell begins by looking at their childhoods in Great Britain, particularly their religious upbringing. He considers their family life, their attitudes toward women and ethnic minorities, what they were reading, and what effect that reading had on their theory and practice. He describes their lives as labor leaders and advocates of socialism, revealing how tenaciously, in an increasingly hierarchical, bureaucratized, and state-driven capitalist society, they held to the idea that socialism must be created by the working class itself. This is a unique look at four Canadian Marxists and their struggle to create an educated, disciplined, democratic, mass-based movement for revolutionary change.
