Funding Ranking 2006

Following on from previous publications in 1997, 2000 and 2003, the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Foundation) presents its fourth "Funding Ranking", an overview of the distribution of awards to universities and non-university research institutions in Germany. The scope of the report has increased considerably compared to previous editions. Alongside the report's central indicator - DFG awards per individual research institution - the document also covers a wide range of additional indicators regarding publicly financed research in one of the world's leading industrial countries. For the first time, the report also includes information on R&D funding for selected federal programmes, for thematic priorities within the European Union's Sixth Framework Programme, and for collaborative industrial research funded by the German Federation of Industrial Cooperative Research Associations "Otto von Guericke". The third party funding indicators, which each depict individual aspects of publicly financed research, represent in total approximately 80 percent of all public third party funding for university research.

Governance and Performance in the German Public Research Sector

2007b: 115 ff.; Jansen 2007c: 236 ff.). “Governance patterns” here means a chain of interconnected mechanisms which can be observed empirically. “Governance p- terns” can be roughly de?ned as “complex regulatory structures coordinating the actions of interdependent actors”. Governance patterns can relate to hierarchical as well as to lateral coordination mechanisms. Enforcement can be based on law, p- fessional norms or informal and implicit norms or customs. Moreover, the regulatory structures or individual mechanisms inside them can be established and sanctioned by public as well as by private actors. There is in fact not necessarily an actor in charge of controlling outcomes as for instance in market competition. In the next section, I will introduce the reader to the changing role of the state in science policy. The third section presents the governance model for the p- lic research sector which was developed by the research group and underlies the 1 contributions in this anthology. The ?nal section gives an overview of the papers.

A pioneering collection of case studies on the global phenomenon of academic excellence initiatives and how they shape the performance of research universities. Academic excellence initiatives (AEIs)—special government-sponsored programs to improve research universities—have provided billions of dollars to top universities and represent perhaps the most significant effort in the past half-century to jumpstart academic research. The contributors to Academic Star Wars, superbly edited by Maria Yudkevich, Philip G. Altbach, and Jamil Salmi, analyze AEIs in nine European and Asian countries, including China, Japan, Malaysia, South Korea, Taiwan, Denmark, France, Germany, and Russia, and offe...

This book investigates the intensifying struggle for excellence between universities in a globalized academic field. The rise of the entrepreneurial university and academic capitalism are superimposing themselves on the competition of scientists for progress of knowledge and recognition by the scientific community. The result is a sharpening institutional stratification of the field. This stratification is produced and continuously reproduced by the intensified struggle for funds with the shrinking of block grants and the growing significance of competitive funding, as well as the increasing impact of international and national rankings on academic research and teaching. The increased alloca...
