Critical Discourse Studies in Context and Cognition
Critical Discourse Studies (CDS) is an exciting research enterprise in which scholars are concerned with the discursive reproduction of power and inequality. Using English as a Lingua Franca in Education in Europe
This volume examines the role of English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) in education in Europe. Following the implementation of the Bologna process, English has assumed a central role in European education offering institutions the opportunity to cater to the needs of an internationalized student body and increase their competitiveness. On the other hand, the increased use of ELF has become an issue of concern, often perceived as a threat to other languages, tilting the scale towards linguistic inequality and stressing the urgent need for the development of new language policies. Both aspects of ELF are at the center of discussion in the proposed volume, which consists of a variety of papers examining ELF in different parts of Europe (Eastern, Central and Western) and different levels of education. Manipulative Fallacies in Early America
This book implements a new approach to the study of manipulative tactics in selected Congressional debates in the early history of the United States, highlighting the ways in which language can be used to manipulate an audience. The identification and analysis of different informal fallacies is central in the approach adopted by the authors, and they privilege the role of covert intentions as a frequent ingredient of manipulation. They also show how different speakers can use different subtypes of the same fallacy in a debate, and investigate the tension between the policy preferences and goals of politicians, and existing laws. Second-Generation South Asian Britons
Second-Generation South Asian Britons: A Narrative Inquiry into Multilingualism, Heritage Languages, and Diasporic Identity uses the narratives of seven high-professional, second-generation South Asian Britons to explore issues related to Heritage Language learning and maintenance, discourses of identity and the practices of multicultural families in the UK. Through semi-structured interviews conducted in English, the participants of the study provide articulate and reflective accounts of the language dynamics in the families they grew up in, the communities and environs of their childhood, their young adulthoods and their current lives as parents of dual-heritage children. By investigating both the stories that they tell and how they tell them, this study offers insights into how monolingual narratives can be used to comment on multilingualism.
