Biofabrication

Breast cancer is a major cause of illness for Australian women. Following tumour resection, breast reconstruction is undertaken for cosmetic and psychological reasons. Reconstruction using silicone-based implants leads to complications such as formation of a rigid fibrous tissue surrounding the implant giving a spherical and unnatural appearance to the breast. Reconstruction using autologous tissue is associated with donor site morbidity, tissue resorption and necrosis. Cell-based tissue engineering is an emerging approach to overcome these problems. Fully vascularised adipose tissue can be engineered in vivo with the help of patient-specific bioabsorbable implants fabricated by additive manufacturing. This chapter focuses on a review of such manufacturing techniques and the strategies being developed to engineer long-term fully vascularised and sustainable adipose tissue.

Advances in Regenerative Medicine

Regenerative medicine is a fast developing field which has led to a paradigm shift in treatment of various diseases. Clinician-scientists worldwide constantly develop novel approaches in various medical specialties (surgery, internal medicine, oncology, neurology, gynecology, pediatrics, etc.) using gene therapy approaches, innovative biomaterials or stem cell based therapies. The book provides a comprehensive overview about current therapies in regenerative medicine. Like the previous volumes within the series it will cover regenerative therapies in various medical fields. A special chapter will focus on ways to commercialize regenerative therapies. The authors are again leaders in this respective fields and are experienced clinicians.

Advanced Therapies in Regenerative Medicine

Regenerative medicine is a fast developing field which has led to a paradigm shift in treatment of various diseases. Clinician-scientists worldwide constantly develop novel approaches in various medical specialties (surgery, internal medicine, oncology, neurology, gynecology, pediatrics, etc.) using gene therapy approaches, innovative biomaterials or stem cell based therapies. It is difficult even for experts to find out what has already reached a clinical stage. The aim of the second volume in this series is to provide the reader with a current update on the latest therapeutic developments. As such, both patients and doctors will find the information contained within this manual to be useful and relevant. The editors are both international leaders in the field of regenerative medicine, and both possess a broad spectrum of experience from basic research to clinical application and commercialization.

A Manual for Current Therapies in Regenerative Medicine

The emerging field of regenerative medicine has led to a paradigm shift in therapeutic procedures. Scientific discovery in stem cell biology and material sciences, as well as in genetics have resulted in clinical concepts that focus on regeneration rather than repair. Also, translational research provided mankind with therapeutic tools to grow complex tissues and organs for transplantation into patients. These new technologies not only benefited patients but they also have significant socioeconomic potential. This manual aims to provide an overview on a variety of clinically applied strategies in the current field of regenerative medicine, and it also contains concise key data for a rapidly growing industry. As such, both patients and doctors will find the information contained within this manual to be useful and relevant. The editors are both international leaders in the field of regenerative medicine, and both possess a broad spectrum of experience from basic research to clinical application and commercialization.
