Studies on Ottoman Social and Political History
Annotation The 19th century prevails in this anthology on the transformation of the late Ottoman state into modern Turkey. Thirty-three articles are arranged in three categories: the Ottoman socio-political transformation, the population movements of immigration and migration, and the formation of nation-states with politico-religious identities. Karpat (history, U. of Wisconsin) has a central aim: to counteract what would become bureaucratic Republican attempts by the Turkish Historical Society (formerly, the Ottoman Historical Society) to cut off Turkish history from its Ottoman past. The THS was able to do this by instead connecting the Republic with its earlier Central Asian roots, and by relying too heavily on European versions of Ottoman/Turkish history more unfavorable to things Ottoman. Topics include the social and economic transformation of Istanbul in the 19th century, Jewish population movements in the Ottoman Empire, Ottoman relations with the Balkan nations after 1683, and Romanian independence and the Ottoman state. Music of the Ottoman Court
Between 1600 and 1750 Ottoman Turkish music differentiated itself from an older Persianate art music and developed the genres antecedent to modern Turkish art music. Based on a translation of Demetrius Cantemir’s seminal “Book of the Science of Music” from the early eighteenth century, this work is the first to bring together contemporaneous notations, musical treatises, literary sources, travellers’ accounts and iconography. These present a synthetic picture of the emergence of Ottoman composed and improvised instrumental music. A detailed comparison of items in the notated Collections of Cantemir and of Bobowski—from fifty years earlier—together with relevant treatises, reveal key aspects of modality, melodic progression and rhythmic structures.

Aristotle's Theory of Language and Its Tradition
This volume contains a fragment from Aristotle s "Peri Hermeneias" [16a1 17a7], with a translation into English and a commentary. This fragment is crucial to the understanding of Aristotle s thinking about language. It is followed by (translations of) commentaries on Aristotle s text by scholars between 500 and 1750, showing how his text was perceived over time. The commentaries are by Ammonius, Boethius, Abelaerd, Albertus Magnus, Thomas Acquinas, Martinus de Dacia, Johannes a S. Thoma, and James Harris. Each commentary is in turn commented upon by the compiler of this volume.
