This edited volume contributes to the ongoing research and practice on applying performance management to university governance. A comparative approach and international perspective of the issue is provided through extensive use of case studies and empirical findings. A specific focus is also placed on using performance governance applied to higher education institutions' Third Mission, and on enhancing decision makers’ ability to frame dynamic complexity. In this regard, specific attention is devoted to analyzing the cause-and-effect relationships in affecting public outcomes. This also includes managing trade-offs in both time and space, and detecting and counteracting unintended behavioral effects from the use of formal systems focused on quantitative measures for performance assessment.
Coordination between different United Nations (UN) entities has become an issue of increasing concern for scholars and practitioners. With the UN taking on ever more ambitious roles in countries emerging from conflict, no single unit can master the task of post-conflict reconstruction alone. However, efforts at reorganizing the way the UN works in peacebuilding have not yielded the desired result of ensuring a more effective UN presence. To offer fresh inputs for the debate, Organizing Peacebuilding looks at coordination from a theoretical perspective. It develops a framework for interorganizational coordination and applies it to the UN and to two selected case examples, the UN missions in Kosovo and Afghanistan. The research suggests that in order to improve coordination, the UN should acknowledge its network character and cultivate those social and structural control mechanisms which facilitate coordination in networks.

This book examines engagements with financial services in contexts of conflict. Using Liberia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo as case studies, it explores informal financial and business strategies and how these shift during conflict. Through a combination of regression analyses and panel data modeling with fixed effects, the project research indicates that conflict has a stronger effect on the nature of demand for credit and savings services than it has on the actual performance of financial institutions. In examining these patterns, the importance of networks and family becomes increasingly important—not just in the ways they are important to us as individuals, but as important determinants of post-war outcomes.

This book examines student mobility within Africa. International student mobility is among the central activities of higher education internationalization. As the number of international students increase, so do the destinations, in both number and geographic diversity. Historically, international student mobility has followed South-North and North-North patterns. However, recent literature show the growth in North-South and South-South patterns of student mobility. There has also been a rise in regional mobility. In what is referred to in the book as intra-Africa mobility, the books explores and analyzes the patterns of intra-Africa mobility based on seven African countries: South Africa, Kenya,Uganda, Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal and Egypt. The editors and contributors addressthree central research questions: Why did the students choose the country they are studying in? Why did they choose the institution they are studying in? What are their academic and social experiences in these countries and their respective institutions? This book is the first comprehensive exploration of intra-Africa student mobility in a field that traditionally centers on the Global North.
This Volume contains papers presented at a symposium organized by the Center for Austrian Studies and held at the University of Minnesota in May 1989. Scholars from Austria, England, Canada, and the United States, specializing in Austrian history, music, art, and literature met to discuss a number of common topics and themes form a variety of perspectives relating to Austria in the age of the French Revolution. This edited collection has sought contributions from some of the foremost scholars of refugee and Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) studies to engage with the conceptual and practical difficulties entailed in realising how the Responsibility to Protect (R2P) can be fulfilled by states and the international community to protect vulnerable persons. Contributors to this book were given one theme: to consider, based on their experience and knowledge, how R2P may be aligned with the protection of the displaced. Contributions explore the history and progress so far in aligning R2P with refugee and IDP protection, as well as examining the conceptual and practical issues that arise when attempting to expand R2P from words into deeds.
