Maurice Tabard
Parmi les photographes de l’entre-deux-guerres, Maurice Tabard occupe une place singulière. Théoricien, auteur de nombreux écrits où s’élabore une réflexion sur l’histoire de l’art, la philosophie des sciences — et notamment des mathématiques —, il demeure avant tout un « curieux », au sens classique du terme. En marge des dogmes et des mouvements constitués, Tabard est pourtant proche du Bauhaus, par son désir d’élaborer une pédagogie de l’art, et de rassembler autour de l’image une communauté de théoriciens et de plasticiens. Il a également des affinités avec le surréalisme. Mais ce qui fait aussi sa force, c’est sa conscience aiguë de la spécificité de l’œuvre photographique. Maurice Tabard prône une esthétique de la rigueur et de la lucidité : il refuse l’arbitraire et le spontanéisme, sans exclure toutefois le jeu et l’innovation. Tabard est ce photographe qui, dans les années trente, sut déjouer toute systématicité, cet insatiable expérimentateur d’images capable de conjoindre le plaisir du dilettantisme et la maîtrise du métier. Un esprit libre.

Photographe paradoxal et hors norme, Thierry Dreyfus laisse toute liberté au public pour découvrir son oeuvre comme il l'entend. La lumière est au centre de ses créations que ce soit pour la mode, le design, la sculpture ou la photographie.

Dorothée Smith n'en fait pas mystère : son approche du visible, luministe et sombre à la fois, vaut comme image de l'incertitude des rôles sexués. La question du genre, thématisée depuis plus de vingt ans par la philosophie tient une place non négligeable dans l'élaboration intellectuelle de son oeuvre.Certains ont pu repérer dans ses images un écho de la peinture de la Renaissance, d'autres une veine romantique. De quoi s'agit-il ? D'une gravité propre à la peinture de portrait florentine, ou des paysages parfois crépusculaires de ses arrière-plans ? Ou bien de la ferveur ombrageuse d'un peintre allemand comme Caspar David Friedrich : un fragment de paysage de la série Löyly ne contient-il pas une sorte de réplique en miniature de tel de ses pics enneigés Arnaud Claas.

The artist/bodybuilder cut out photographs of his own body, bought superb butterflies from entomologists, and made wings from the in - structions for doping drugs: a playful exercise, though one that is not devoid of melancholy beneath its quirky surface. Here and there, the bodybuilders bulky trainers seem to anchor him to the ground, hinder - ing his flight, while metal pins fix his muscular body to the suddenly claustrophobic interior of a box. Gender and Laughter
This essay collection is dedicated to intersections between gender theories and theories of laughter, humour, and comedy. It is based on the results of a three-year research programme, entitled “Gender – Laughter – Media” (2003-2006) and includes a series of investigations on traditional and modern media in western cultures from the 18th to the 20th century. A theoretical opening part is followed by four thematic sections that explore the multiple forms of irritating stereotypical gender perceptions; aspects of (post-)colonialism and multiculturalism; the comic impact of literary and media genres in different national cultures; as well as the different comic strategies in fictional, philosophical, artistic or real life communication. The volume presents a variety of new approaches to the overlaps between gender and laughter that have only barely been considered in groundbreaking research. It forms a valuable read for scholars of literary, theatre, media, and cultural studies, at the same time reaching out to a general readership.
