"This technical reference provides a process for using aerial photos to assess functioning condition of riparian-wetland areas, thereby reducing field time and costs"--Report documentation page.
In the 1930s, the Air Corps Tactical School at Maxwell Field, Alabama, was the nurturing ground for American air doctrine. Those who studied and taught there were the same individuals who prepared America for war, and then led its airmen into combat.
"The Bureau of Land Management and Forest Service, working with the Natural Resources Conservation Service, have established a method for evaluating the condition of riparian wetland areas. The method involves assessing whether an area is in proper functioning condition. This qualitative, yet science-based process considers both abiotic and biotic factors as they relate to physical function. It facilitates communication about the condition of a riparian-wetland area and focuses attention on the physical process before considering values. A standard checklist is used to ensure consistency in reporting the condition of riparian-wetland areas. Occasionally, items on the checklist will have to be quantified to determine how they should be answered, and numerous methods of quantification are provided."--Report documentation page.
