Recent Progress in Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transitions

The concept of the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) provides a basis for understanding complex changes in gene expression, molecular function and cell behaviour. This field has undergone explosive growth in the last few years as the concept has spread from developmental biology to the pathologies of cancer and fibrosis. As scientists are on the verge of being able to control or mitigate the process of EMT in some pathological conditions, understanding of its fundamental mechanisms is of vital importance. This special issue brings together selected reviews and new data from the Boden Conference on Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transitions. The reviews highlight developmental, cancer and pathological EMTs, and are rich in detail at the cell and molecular levels. The publication is aimed at cancer biologists, pathologists and developmental biologists who are interested in why cells begin to move, and the genes and molecules involved in this process.

Cancer Metastasis

Cancer Metastasis

Metastasis is responsible for a large burden of morbidity and mortality among cancer patients, and currently few therapies specifically target metastatic disease. Further scientific dissection of the underlying pathways is required to pave the way for new therapeutic targets. This groundbreaking new text comprehensively covers the processes underlying cancer metastasis and the clinical treatment of metastatic disease. Whereas previous volumes have been compendia of laboratory research articles, the internationally renowned authors of this volume have summarized the state-of-the-art research in the metastasis field. A major section covers the cellular and molecular pathways of metastasis and experimental techniques and the systems and models applied in this field. Subsequently, the clinical aspects of the major cancer types are considered, focusing on disease-specific research and therapeutic approaches to metastatic disease. The focus is on novel pathophysiological insights and emerging therapies; future directions for research and unmet clinical needs are also discussed.

Developmental Biology Protocols

Developmental biology is one of the most exciting and fast-growing fields today. In part, this is so because the subject matter deals with the innately fascinating biological events—changes in form, structure, and function of the organism. The other reason for much of the excitement in developmental biology is that the field has truly become the unifying melting pot of biology, and provides a framework that integrates anatomy, physiology, genetics, biochemistry, and cellular and molecular biology, as well as evolutionary biology. No longer is the study of embryonic development merely “embryology.” In fact, development biology has produced important paradigms for both basic and clinical...

Physiology of the Gastrointestinal Tract, Two Volume Set

Physiology of the Gastrointestinal Tract, Fifth Edition — winner of a 2013 Highly Commended BMA Medical Book Award for Internal Medicine — covers the study of the mechanical, physical, and biochemical functions of the GI Tract while linking the clinical disease or disorder, bridging the gap between clinical and laboratory medicine. The gastrointestinal system is responsible for the breakdown and absorption of various foods and liquids needed to sustain life. Other diseases and disorders treated by clinicians in this area include: food allergies, constipation, chronic liver disease and cirrhosis, gallstones, gastritis, GERD, hemorrhoids, IBS, lactose intolerance, pancreatic, appendicitis,...

Rise and Fall of Epithelial Phenotype

Rise and Fall of Epithelial Phenotype

Epithelial phenotype is a dynamic stage of differentiation that can be modulated during several physiological or pathological events. The rapid conversion to a mesenchymal-like phenotype is called an epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). The Rise and Fall of Epithelial Phenotype is the first book to comprehensively introduce the concept of EMT. The first part of this volume describes main examples and models and explains their physiological relevance. These examples include hydra morphogenesis, gastrulation in mouse, drosophila and sea urchin, as well as neural crest cell migration and heart morphogenesis in vertebrates. Part two reviews in detail, specific EMT molecular pathways covering extracellular induction, transduction and transcription response and modulation of cell-cell adhesion structures. It emphasizes new specific pathways with potential medical applications. EMTs can also be linked to pathological events such as wound healing and cancer progression, as detailed in this section of the book.

Neural Crest Induction and Differentiation

Written by an international panel of recognized leaders in the field, Neural Crest Induction and Differentiation discusses all aspects of modern neural crest biology from its evolutionary significance to its specification, migration, plasticity and contribution to multiple lineages of the vertebrate body, to the pathologies associated with abnormal neural crest development and function. Abundant color figures enhance the text providing clear and attractive illustrations of central issues and concepts.

Embryos, Genes and Birth Defects

The first edition of Embryos, Genes and BirthDefects, edited by the late Peter Thorogood, was a radicalnew book aimed at bridging the gap between the medical disciplinesof embryology and dysmorphology, and recent advances in cellular, molecular and developmental biology. This new edition remainsunique in its breadth and brings up to date our understanding ofbirth defects and of the strategies utilized to gain suchknowledge. It features new chapters on human cytogenetics, mutagenesis and the eyes and ears. The book presents key topics in developmental biology andexplains how they provide the foundations for understandingclinical birth defects. The first six chapters introduce conceptsand strate...

This book explores Probabilistic Cellular Automata (PCA) from the perspectives of statistical mechanics, probability theory, computational biology and computer science. PCA are extensions of the well-known Cellular Automata models of complex systems, characterized by random updating rules. Thanks to their probabilistic component, PCA offer flexible computing tools for complex numerical constructions, and realistic simulation tools for phenomena driven by interactions among a large number of neighboring structures. PCA are currently being used in various fields, ranging from pure probability to the social sciences and including a wealth of scientific and technological applications. This situa...

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 10th International Conference on Cellular Automata for Research and Industry, ACRI 2012, held in Santorini Island, Greece, in September 2012. The 88 revised papers were carefully selected from numerous submissions. In order to give a perspective in which both theoretical and applicational aspects of cellular automata contribute to the growth of the area, this book mirrors the structure of the conference, grouping the 88 papers into two main parts. The first part collects papers presented as part of the main conference and organized according to six main topics: theoretical results on cellular automata; cellular automata dynamics, control ...
