Understanding the Under 3s and the Implications for Education
This book originated from an awareness of the persistent lack of knowledge supporting a more respectful reception and approach to the youngest in our changing societies. It follows initiatives of networks of researchers from several countries, sharing insights from current studies carried out in their different cultures. Introduced by a state of art review-like chapter on birth to 3 literature, the book, which can be pictured as a composition, begins with a journey inside the creativity of these young persons and a picture of a companionable learning. It deals with the role of the spatial and physical dimensions of the setting and pictures how the educator can create meaningful participation and launch early exercises in democracy, with respect for diversities. It provides a deeper understanding of a pedagogical accompaniment based on ‘participatory alliance’ and of the development of communication and language. The text will be a useful addition to researchers, practitioners, and other stakeholders. This book was originally published as a special issue of the European Early Childhood Education Research Journal.
Family-Peer Relationships
Originally published in 1992, this volume provided an up-to-date overview of recent research concerning the links between family and peer systems. Considerable work in the past had focused on family issues or peer relationships, but these systems had typically been considered separately. This volume bridges the gap across these two important socialization contexts and provides insights into the processes that account for the links across the systems – the ways in which the relationships between these systems shift across development. In addition, the variations in the links between family and peers are illustrated by cross-cultural work, studies of abused children, and research on the impact of maternal depression. An Arena for Educational Ideologies
Educational processes are shaped by societal ideas and values. Different ideologies shape the discourses, content, processes and pedagogies of teacher education processes. The book includes cases or illustrations of teacher education in the Montessori, Waldorf, Reggio Emilia and Pistoia traditions, as well as the democratic tradition embraced by the Kibbutz Movement in Israel. Understanding the ideologies that constitute the basis of teacher education programs might predict some of the outcomes of diverse programs on one hand, and serve the adaptation of teacher education to societal needs and requirements, on the other hand. Purposes of schooling, the value of knowledge and the relationship between teacher education and the goals of a democratic society have to be clarified in order to improve education in the service of society and its future. The work of schools depends on the interaction between content, teacher and student. Therefore, the preparation of teachers becomes a central aspect of education.
