AFSPA & Human Rights Violation: Analytical findings of Ukhrul District, Manipur.
This book is centered on understanding public sentiment, with a primary emphasis on formulating constructive solutions derived from input provided by various stakeholders and civil society organizations. Unfortunately, Ukhrul district was considered a ‘disturbed area’ even before AFSPA was imposed in the whole state of Manipur on 8th September 1980. The fact is, even if there is peace and harmony in the state, it is always considered disturbed due to hostility. Taking advantage of this, gross human rights violations have been committed for decades. Several protests and rallies have been staged but have gone unnoticed by the Central and State governments, leaving much agitation and protests in vain. The overarching goal of this book is to foster a deeper understanding between the Armed Forces and the residents of Ukhrul with a concurrent emphasis on making positive contributions to enhance the overall well-being of the state of Manipur.
Naga Textiles
The focus of this comprehensive work is the aesthetics and the decryption of the language of the textiles of the Nagas, a group of tribal local cultures in the north-east of India and the north-west of Burma. For more than ten years, anthropologist Marion Wettstein has systematically been drawing the traditional fabrics, and researching their design, production techniques, meaning and contemporary transposition into fashion. More than 60 color pencil drawings and 180 watercolors on the morphology of the textile samples are considered by the author to be not just an artistic translation but in particular visual argumentation. While the work shows how the textile patterns are laden with meaning of a complex system of status and social structure, it also illuminates what is understood by these concepts in the context of the Nagas and to what extent they are also constructs of colonial and scientific intervention.

Untouchability in Rural India
This important book presents systematic evidence of the incidence and extent of the practice of untouchability in contemporary India. It is based on the results of a very large survey covering 560 villages in eleven states. The field data is supplemented by information concerning associated forms of discrimination which Dalits face in their daily lives./-//-/This study finds that untouchability is practised in one form or another in almost 80 per cent of the villages surveyed. It is most prevalent in the religious and personal spheres. While the evidence presented in this book suggests that the more blatant and extreme forms of untouchability appear to have declined, discrimination is still practised in one form or another. The most widespread manifestations are in access to water and to cremation or burial grounds, as also when it comes to the major life cycle rituals. The survey also found that the notion of untouchability continues to pervade the public sphere, including in a host of state institutions and the interactions that occur within them.
Sudras in Ancient India
The present work has been undertaken not only to provide an adequate treatment of the position of the sudras in ancient times, but also to evaluate their modern characterizations, either based on insufficient data, or inspired by reformist or anti-reformist motives. Here an attempt has been made to present a connected and systematic account of the various developments in the position of the sudras down to circa A.D. 600. Since the sudras were regarded as the laboring class, in this study particular attention has been paid to the investigation of their material conditions has been paid to their economic and social relations with the members of the higher varnas. This has naturally involved the study of the position of slaves, with whom the sudras were considered identical. The untouchables are also theoretically placed in the category of sudras, and hence their origin and position has also been discussed in some detail.
